The mother, Maria, froze as the heavy wooden door slowly creaked inward. From the depths of the room, a draft of cold, stagnant air brushed past, completely alien to the preschool’s warm atmosphere. The lights inside were out, and only the bright illumination from the hallway cut through the room’s engulfing darkness. Standing on the threshold was not her little daughter, Lily. There, in the shadows, loomed a tall, unnaturally thin figure whose long, distorted fingers were still resting on the doorknob.
Leo, the little boy, pulled away from the nanny, Helen, who no longer had the strength to hold him. Helen sank to her knees on the linoleum floor, her lips trembling and her eyes fixed on the shadow. “I… I was only following orders,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, filled with guilt and unspeakable dread. She had known what lay behind that door, but she never imagined it had awakened.
Maria’s heart felt as though it had stopped, but maternal instinct triumphed over the paralyzing fear. “Lily!” she called out in a choked voice, taking a step toward the dark room. In response, a strange, wheezing laughter echoed from the darkness, followed by the same heavy, rasping breath. The shadow moved forward, and under the hallway light, its lifeless, perfectly white eyes came into view.

At that moment, Lily’s faint sobbing echoed from the far corner of the room: “Mommy, help me…” That was all it took. Forgetting her own safety, Maria lunged inside. She shoved past the horrifying figure—which was surprisingly light and cold as air—and bolted toward the small cabinet in the corner where the voice was coming from.
Meanwhile, Helen, as if snapping out of her shock, grabbed Leo’s hand and screamed, “Run! It’s not alone!” But it was already too late. The brightly colored walls of the kindergarten began to blacken with a strange, creeping mold, and the hallway lights flickered violently, dying out one by one and plunging the story into absolute darkness.
