The End of an Era: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Killed in Coordinated Strikes, Concluding a 37-Year Rule

In a monumental development that is poised to fundamentally reshape the geopolitical architecture of the Middle East, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died at the age of 86. His death follows an unprecedented series of coordinated military airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel on February 28.

The assassination brings a sudden and violent end to Khamenei’s 37-year reign—one of the longest, most consequential, and most controversial leadership tenures in the modern history of the Islamic Republic.

From Revolutionary to Absolute Ruler

Born on April 19, 1939, in the holy city of Mashhad to an impoverished clerical family, Khamenei’s ideological foundation was laid at the prestigious Qom religious seminary. He quickly emerged as a fierce proponent of political Islam, heavily involving himself in the underground movement against the U.S.-backed Shah, which resulted in multiple arrests and periods of internal exile.

Following the seismic Islamic Revolution of 1979, Khamenei rapidly ascended the newly formed political hierarchy. He held a succession of pivotal roles, including Deputy Defense Minister, acting commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and parliamentarian. In 1981, he was elected President of Iran, surviving an assassination attempt mere months into his term that permanently paralyzed his right arm.
