Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of the Syndicate

The federal task force didn't waste a single minute.

By noon, the quiet, snow-draped gravel drive of the Moretti estate was crowded with unmarked black federal vehicles, their emergency lights flashing a dull, muted red against the white backdrop of the January snow. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois had personally authorized the raid on Charles Bellamy’s downtown corporate offices, backed by the audio files extracted from Sophia Moretti’s recovered cell phone and the encrypted flash drives Dominic had dropped in the tarmac slush.

I stood by the tall, arched windows of the grand salon, watching two federal agents escort Charles Bellamy out of the front entrance.

The immaculate, silver-haired corporate lawyer no longer looked like an untouchable architect of power. His designer overcoat was unbuttoned, his tie was gone, and his hands were cuffed securely behind his back. As he was led toward an awaiting federal van, Charles turned his head slightly, his tired, defeated eyes meeting mine through the reinforced glass.

He didn't look angry. He just looked old—a man who had spent his entire life building a monument out of other people's blood and paper, only to watch it collapse because of a cracked eight-year-old phone and an eight-year-old child's stubborn sense of justice.

Vincent walked up quietly beside me, handing me a fresh cup of black coffee in a simple ceramic mug.

“They picked up Dominic at a private medical clinic near Rockford two hours ago,” Vincent said, his voice completely calm, devoid of any triumph. “He tried to change flights in Wisconsin, but the local authorities caught him before he crossed the state line.”

I took the mug, wrapping my fingers around its warmth. “What happens to the empire now, Vincent? Everything your family built…”

“It burns down to the studs, Clara, and that’s exactly where it needs to start over,” Vincent replied, looking out at the snow-covered grounds. “The shipping terminals are being transferred to public port authorities under federal oversight. The offshore accounts are being liquidated to fund victims' compensation trusts. For the first time in three generations, the Moretti name isn't going to be synonymous with fear.”

He turned his dark eyes toward me, the raw edge in his expression replaced by a steady, grounding calm.

“And you don't ever have to look over your shoulder again.”
