CHAPTER 3: A Hidden Truth

CHAPTER 3: A Hidden Truth
Ethan awoke before dawn, a habit formed by years of board meetings and international conference calls. The penthouse was unusually quiet. As he walked toward the kitchen, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air.
He stopped in surprise.
Lena stood at the counter, still wearing the borrowed sweater he had left outside the guest room. Her damp scrubs had been washed overnight and now hung neatly over a chair. She looked embarrassed to have been caught.
"I'm sorry," she said softly. "I couldn't sleep, so I cleaned up a little. I hope you don't mind."
Ethan glanced around.
The dishes had been washed. The countertops gleamed. Even the stack of unopened mail on the island had been neatly organized.
"You didn't have to do this."
"I know. I just... didn't want to feel like I was taking advantage of your kindness."
Before he could answer, a tiny cry drifted down the hallway.
Noah was awake.
Lena hurried toward the guest room, but Ethan found himself following. The little boy stretched his arms toward his mother, then paused when he noticed the unfamiliar man standing nearby.
For a second, the baby simply stared.
Then, unexpectedly, Noah smiled.
A wide, toothless smile.
Ethan chuckled.
"I think that's the first time anyone has smiled at me before I've had coffee."
Lena laughed quietly.
"It means he feels safe."
The words lingered in the room longer than either of them expected.
Across the city, another morning was beginning very differently.
Inside a private office overlooking downtown, Victor Grayson stood beside the window with a tablet in his hand.
His assistant entered nervously.
"Our men confirmed the location."
Victor didn't look up.
"The CEO?"
"Yes, sir. Ethan Cole."
Victor finally turned.
"I've heard of him."
"He owns ColeMed Technologies."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Then this is inconvenient."
"What would you like us to do?"
Victor walked toward his desk.
"Nothing reckless."
His voice remained calm, almost pleasant.
"The woman is a nurse. The child is valuable."
"And the CEO?"
Victor's smile vanished.
"If Ethan Cole chooses to interfere..."
He closed the folder in front of him.
"...he'll learn that not every battle can be won with money."
Back at the penthouse, Ethan's security chief arrived.
Marcus Dalton was a former military officer whose calm demeanor usually meant trouble.
He shook Ethan's hand before surveying the apartment.
"This is them?"
Ethan nodded.
"Lena Hart."
Marcus offered a polite smile.
"And this little guy must be Noah."
The baby reached for Marcus's tie.
Marcus grinned.
"Strong grip."
Then his expression became serious.
"I checked the building's security footage."
Ethan folded his arms.
"And?"
"The SUV stayed outside for twenty-three minutes."
Lena's face lost its color.
"They've never stayed that long before."
Marcus immediately caught the wording.
"'They've never'?"
Lena lowered her eyes.
"I've seen that SUV before."
"How many times?"
She hesitated.
"Since Noah was born."
Silence filled the room.
Marcus exchanged a glance with Ethan.
"Mrs. Hart..."
"It's Miss."
Marcus nodded.
"Miss Hart... who exactly is following you?"
Lena opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Her hands began trembling.
Ethan noticed.
"You don't have to answer if you're not ready."
"No."
She looked at Noah sleeping peacefully in his portable crib.
"I have to."
She took a slow breath.
"I used to work in the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Gabriel Medical Center."
"I know the hospital," Ethan said.
"About seven months ago, I witnessed something I wasn't supposed to see."
Marcus leaned forward.
"What?"
"A newborn was declared dead."
Ethan frowned.
"But..."
"I heard him crying."
The room fell completely silent.
"I checked his chart. His vital signs had been altered."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Go on."
"The baby wasn't dead."
She swallowed.
"He was alive."
Ethan felt a chill.
"What happened?"
"I reported it to my supervisor."
"And?"
"The records disappeared the next morning."
Marcus asked quietly,
"The child?"
"Gone."
Lena's eyes filled with tears.
"They told me I imagined everything."
She reached into her backpack and carefully removed a small flash drive.
"I didn't imagine it."
She placed it on the coffee table.
"I copied security footage before it was erased."
Ethan stared at the device.
"You've been carrying this all this time?"
She nodded.
"It's the only proof."
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"If what she's saying is true..."
"It isn't just corruption," Ethan finished.
"It's trafficking."
Lena closed her eyes.
"I think someone has been stealing newborns."
The words hung heavily in the air.
No one spoke.
Finally Ethan asked the question that had been bothering him since the night before.
"What does this have to do with Noah?"
Lena looked at her sleeping son.
Then she whispered the sentence she had feared saying aloud for months.
"Because..."
"...the baby I saved that night..."
"...was my own."
At that exact moment, Marcus's phone vibrated.
He looked down at the security alert.
His face changed instantly.
"Ethan."
"What is it?"
Marcus turned the screen toward him.
"There was an unauthorized signal transmitting from inside this penthouse."
Lena's heart stopped.
Marcus zoomed in on the digital floor plan.
The blinking signal originated from only one location.
Noah's diaper bag.
Someone had hidden a GPS tracker among the baby's belongings.

Whoever planted it was already moving toward the building.
