Chapter 7 - The Ultimatum

By mid-afternoon, the penthouse was entirely cleared of Veronica’s presence.
Her designer gowns, her shoes, her cosmetics, and her personal belongings had been dumped into industrial black trash bags by the estate moving crew and hauled down to the service loading dock. The glass walls of the Manhattan penthouse felt lighter, cleaner, as if a toxic fog had finally been vacuumed out of the air by the ventilation system.
Ethan sat at his glass desk in the study, reviewing the final legal dissolution documents, when a soft knock sounded on the open door.
He looked up.
Rosa stood in the doorway, holding a fresh cup of tea. She had changed out of her standard black maid’s uniform into a simple, elegant blue linen dress—clothes she had bought months ago with her own savings but had never dared to wear around Veronica.
“Mr. Mercer,” Rosa said hesitantly, stepping into the room. “I brought you some green tea. You’ve been staring at those screens for three hours straight.”
Ethan smiled, closing his laptop lid. He stood up, stretching his broad shoulders. “Thank you, Rosa. Honestly, reviewing corporate security protocols feels like a vacation compared to what happened this morning.”
Rosa set the tea down on the desk, her eyes lingering on his face for a moment. “What happens now?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well,” Rosa looked down at her hands, suddenly nervous. “With Miss Veronica gone... I assume you’ll be hiring a professional estate manager. Someone with high-society credentials who knows how to run a place like this properly. My contract is technically just for housekeeping...”
Before she could finish her sentence, Ethan closed the distance between them, stopping just inches away. The sudden proximity made Rosa’s breath catch.
“Rosa, look at me,” Ethan said, his voice firm, gentle, and utterly uncompromising.
She looked up, her dark brown eyes meeting his intense gaze.
“You are not leaving this penthouse,” Ethan said. “And I am certainly not hiring a society manager to replace you. You know this home better than anyone. More importantly... you and Lily brought something into this place that has been missing ever since I built it.”
“What’s that?” Rosa whispered.
“Life,” Ethan answered simply. “Real life. Warmth, honesty, and a heartbeat.”
Rosa felt a familiar warmth rush to her cheeks. She looked away for a second, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the shift in her world. Just this morning, she had been a terrified housekeeper walking on eggshells, terrified of losing her meager safety net. Now, standing here in the heart of Manhattan’s most exclusive glass tower, she was looking into the eyes of one of the most powerful men in the world—and seeing only absolute sincerity.
“Mr. Mercer... Ethan,” Rosa corrected herself softly. “I don't even know who I am outside of being a mother and a worker. My whole life has been just surviving from one crisis to the next.”
May you like
“Then let me help you build something more than survival,” Ethan said, reaching out to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek, sending a sudden, electric shiver through her spine. “Stay here with me, Rosa. Not as an employee hiding in the shadows... but as my partner.”
The words hung in the air, rich with possibility, floating above the glittering skyline of the city below.
