Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

An hour later, Julian arrived home.

The moment he walked through the door, he knew something was wrong. The house was quiet, but it wasn't the dead silence of grief—it was a charged, vibrating tension.

He found Avery in the kitchen, furiously scrubbing a clean countertop with a rag, her shoulders rigid, her knuckles white.

"Avery?" Julian asked, setting his briefcase down. "What happened? Where are the boys?"

"They're upstairs with Mrs. Gable," Avery said, her voice tight, refusing to turn around. "They're fine."

Julian walked quickly across the tile floor, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Avery, look at me."

She spun around, her eyes red-rimmed, brimming with tears she was desperately trying to hold back.

"Someone came here today, Julian," she blurted out, her voice breaking. "A woman. Working for someone who wants to ruin you at your company."

Julian’s eyes turned to cold stone. "Who?"

"She offered me fifty thousand dollars," Avery said, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "To lie. To sign a paper saying you were an unfit father. Saying you were neglecting the boys. Saying that... that you and I were having an improper relationship."

Julian felt an explosion of pure, dark fury ignite in his chest. Marcus Vance. He had crossed the line from corporate maneuverings into invading Julian's sanctuary, harassing the woman who had saved his family.

"I tore it up," Avery sobbed, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. "I threw it in her face and told her to go to hell. But... but Julian, she’s right about one thing."

Julian took a step closer, his hands grasping her arms gently. "What are you talking about? She’s a mercenary lie, Avery."

"No!" Avery cried, stepping back, pulling out of his grip. "She’s right that I don't belong here! Look at this! Look at your life! You live in a world of boardrooms, millions of dollars, country clubs, and corporate espionage! I’m a girl from East Indy who paints pinecones with seven-year-olds! People are whispering about you because of me. Your board is doubting you because of me!"

"Avery, stop it!" Julian commanded, his voice raw with emotion.

"I can't stay, Julian!" she wept, shaking her head frantically. "If I stay, they will use me to hurt you. They will use me to drag your name through the mud and take your company away. And worse... if I stay, I’m going to end up getting my heart completely broken!"

Julian felt as if the ground had been pulled out from beneath him. "What are you saying?"

Avery looked up at him, her hazel eyes completely open, completely shattered, completely real.

"I’m saying I love them, Julian!" she cried softly. "I love Oliver. I love Reid. I love Mason. And... god help me, I love you. I fell in love with you watching you try so hard to be a good father through the worst pain of your life. And because I love you, I can't let my presence destroy everything you've built!"

Julian stood frozen, his breath locked in his throat.

Avery turned, grabbed her coat from the chair, and ran out the side door into the dark, cold night, her footsteps echoing against the pavement.

"Avery!" Julian roared, sprinting after her.

He burst out into the driveway just as her small car started up, its headlights cutting through the darkness. She threw the car into reverse, backed down the long drive, and disappeared into the fog.

Julian stood in the middle of the cold driveway, the damp wind whipped against his face, his lungs burning.

The silence returned.

It rushed back into the driveway, into the hallway, into the vast, empty house like a tidal wave of cold, black water.

Julian fell to his knees on the pavement, burying his face in his hands, staring into the dark.

He had lost Natalie to a dark road. And now, his own fear, his own world, had driven away the only light his family had found since.
