Chapter 31

The old military truck handled the rugged mountain roads with surprising agility, winding down through the foothills as the sun fully claimed the sky.

Collins kept her eyes glued to the side mirrors, watching for any sign of high-speed pursuit from the mercenary teams we left behind.

On the floorboard between us, her satellite phone suddenly buzzed, its screen flashing with an encrypted high-priority federal notification.

She snatched it up instantly, pressing it to her ear while James kept his hands firmly locked onto the massive steering wheel.

"Bennett, give me some good news," Collins said, her voice cutting through the loud, mechanical drone of the vintage engine.

The cabin was quiet as we all strained our ears to hear the distant, tinny voice responding from the other end of the secure line.

"The trap is sprung, Collins," Agent Bennett replied, his breath coming in short, excited gasps over the satellite connection.

"We have three federal tactical teams currently breaching the main perimeter gates of the Apex Global Headquarters compound in Virginia."

"The Department of Justice just signed off on the emergency warrants for treason, corporate espionage, and first-degree murder."

"But Brooks isn't going down without a fight; his private security force has locked down the entire central executive tower."

"They've activated heavy military-grade blast shields around the penthouse server array, turning the top three floors into a veritable fortress."

I exchanged a grim, knowing look with Claire, who was gently rocking a restless Ethan back to sleep in her arms.

Charles Brooks knew that if the feds managed to access his central network, his life, his fortune, and his legacy would vanish overnight.

He was a cornered animal now, dangerous, unpredictable, and possessed enough firepower to turn a corporate office into a literal warzone.

"We are ninety minutes away from the secondary safehouse," Collins informed Bennett, her tone leaving no room for argument or delay.

"We have the physical decryption drive, which means your teams don't need to crack his firewall manually if you can get us inside."

"Keep that perimeter secure, Bennett, because the real key to destroying Apex is sitting right here in my hand."

She ended the call, turning around in her seat to look back at me with an expression that was a mix of dark determination and exhaustion.

The battle lines were officially drawn in the open now, shifting from a hidden mountain bunker to the concrete and glass towers of corporate America.

And for the first time in my life, we weren't just running away from the monsters; we were actively riding into the heart of the storm to hunt them down.
