CHAPTER 2: THE SILENCE INSIDE
Backup arrived within ten minutes.
The house still looked normal.
Too normal.
White walls.
Clean driveway.
Perfect lawn.
The kind of place that never admits anything is wrong.
Officer Miles stood at the door with the second officer.
“We’ve knocked multiple times,” he said. “No response.”
The second officer frowned.
“Neighbors say they’re home?”
Miles nodded.
The girl still sat on the steps behind them.
Watching.
Waiting.
The second officer knocked harder.
“Police department. Open the door.”
Silence.
Then—
a faint movement inside.
A lock clicked.
The door opened just a few inches.
A woman stood there.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm expression.
Too calm.
“Yes?” she asked.
Miles immediately stepped forward.
“We’re conducting a welfare check on the child outside.”
The woman blinked.
“Oh.”
A pause.
“She’s fine.”
Miles frowned.
“She’s sitting outside alone.”
The woman smiled slightly.
“She prefers it.”
That answer made the second officer step forward.
“Ma’am, we need to speak with her inside.”
The woman didn’t move.
“You’re welcome to leave,” she said politely.
But something in her tone wasn’t polite.
It was final.
Miles glanced behind him.
Lily was still watching.
He turned back.
“Ma’am, I need to confirm she’s safe.”
The woman sighed.
“She is safe.”
A pause.
“She is just… inconvenient.”
Miles froze slightly.
“Inconvenient?”
The woman’s smile tightened.
“She asks too many questions.”
Silence.
The second officer spoke sharply.
“Step aside.”
The woman didn’t.
Instead—
she called out softly.
“Lily.”
The girl flinched slightly.
Then stood up and walked toward the door.
Miles watched carefully.
“Are you okay?” he asked her.
Lily nodded.
But didn’t look at him.
She only looked at the floor.
The woman placed a hand on her shoulder.
“She’s fine,” she repeated.
But Lily spoke suddenly.
“Can I stay outside longer?”
The woman’s grip tightened slightly.
“No.”
That single word carried weight.
Miles noticed it instantly.
The second officer stepped closer.
“Ma’am, we’re going to need to—”
But then—
a sound from inside the house cut him off.
Something falling.
Then silence again.
The woman didn’t react.
But Lily did.
She flinched.
