Part 19

My father let out a raw, animalistic scream of frustration and lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron poker directly toward my head.
“Myra, look out!” Jenna shrieked, grabbing my jacket and pulling me backward just in time.
The heavy iron bar smashed into the antique mirror, shattering the glass into thousands of sharp shards that rained down onto the hardwood floor with a deafening crash.
The impact jarred my father’s arms, causing him to lose his balance and stumble over the broken glass.
I didn't waste a single second.
I grabbed the heavy marble desk lamp next to me and threw it with all my strength at his legs, knocking him completely off balance.
He fell heavily to the floor, the iron poker slipping from his grip and rolling across the room.
Before he could push himself back up, the sound of loud, heavy footsteps echoed outside the study, and the double doors were forcefully kicked open.
Four police officers burst into the room with their weapons drawn, led by Detective Miller and Mr. Whitman.
“Drop your weapons! Stay on the ground!” the officers shouted, immediately swarming my father and pinning him to the floor, pulling his arms behind his back to snap a pair of handcuffs into place.
My father didn't fight back anymore. He just lay there on the broken glass, weeping uncontrollably, his spirit completely broken.
Detective Miller walked over to me, checking to see if we were unharmed. “Are you two alright?”
“We’re fine,” I said, breathing heavily, my hand still resting on Jenna’s shoulder to keep her steady. “The hidden safe is right there behind the shattered mirror. He was trying to destroy the evidence before we could open it.”

Mr. Whitman stepped forward, looking at the safe. “We don't need the code, Myra. I brought a specialized forensic technician with us. They can bypass this lock in less than two minutes.”
I looked down at my father as the officers lifted him up to escort him out of the room. He couldn't even look me in the eye, hanging his head in complete shame as he was led away into the dark night.
