Chapter 4 - Two Years Later (Ending)

Lily suffered a skull fracture and a moderate concussion.
Thankfully...
No brain surgery was required.
The neurosurgeon told us something I replayed a thousand times afterward.
“Had she landed just an inch differently…”
He never finished.
He didn't need to.
During the investigation, prosecutors discovered something I had suspected for years.
My father's violence hadn't started with me.
My elementary school records documented repeated unexplained bruises.
An emergency room visit at age nine described “belt-shaped injuries.”
A guidance counselor had filed concerns that somehow disappeared.
Old wounds suddenly became evidence.
Gerald was charged with felony child abuse, aggravated battery on a minor, and assault causing serious bodily injury.
My mother wasn't charged for the assault itself.
But investigators did charge her with attempting to interfere with witnesses after she spent weeks calling relatives, urging them to “remember it differently.”
The recorded phone calls destroyed her credibility.
At trial, I testified for nearly six hours.
The defense attorney tried everything.
“Ms. Hutchinson, isn't it true emotions can affect memory?”
“Yes.”
“Could your feelings toward your father influence your testimony?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because memory can be questioned.”
I pointed toward the courtroom monitor.
“Video cannot.”
The prosecutor played every recording.
Frame by frame.
Gerald removing the belt.
Lily apologizing.
The swing.
The fall.
Then my mother's unmistakable voice.
"Your daughter deserved it for being disrespectful."
No explanation survived those words.
When James testified, the courtroom grew silent.
He described hearing Lily ask politely for a drink.
He described watching his wife become both mother and former prosecutor in the same heartbeat.
Then he looked at the jury.
“Our daughter didn't need revenge.”
“She needed adults.”
Several jurors wiped away tears.
After less than four hours of deliberation, the verdict came back.
Guilty on every count.
Gerald received a lengthy prison sentence.
The judge looked directly at him before imposing it.
“Respect is never taught through terror.”
My mother received probation, mandatory counseling, and a lifetime restraining order prohibiting unsupervised contact with Lily.
Neither my brother nor my sister spoke to me afterward.
May you like
They blamed me for destroying the family.
They never once blamed the man holding the belt.
