Coworkers Set Up Poor Waitress with Deaf Mafia Boss

CHAPTER 2: The Language No One Expected

The silence stretched so long that it became almost physical.

Outside the private dining room, three servers and Brett had their ears pressed against the polished oak door.

"...Any second now," Brett whispered with a smirk.

"She's probably standing there like an idiot."

"I give it another thirty seconds before she comes running out crying."

Laughter rippled quietly through the hallway.

Inside, however...

Something completely different was happening.

Tessa steadied her breathing.

Her heart pounded so violently she thought he might actually hear it.

The man at the head of the table still hadn't looked up.

His sharp features remained unreadable beneath the soft amber light.

Most people would have spoken louder.

Some would have repeated themselves.

Others would have awkwardly wave their hands.

But Tessa knew better.

She slowly stepped into his field of vision.

Not too close.

Not aggressively.

Just enough.

Then...

She gently lifted one hand.

Her fingers moved with practiced grace.

Good evening. My name is Tessa. I'll be serving you tonight.

The room froze.

Not because she had spoken.

Because she hadn't.

Every word had been spoken through American Sign Language.

For the first time since she entered...

Salvatore Marquetti looked up.

His dark eyes locked onto hers.

The change was immediate.

Not surprise.

Shock.

Pure, unmistakable shock.

The expression lasted barely a heartbeat before years of discipline buried it beneath a mask of stone.

Yet Tessa had seen it.

He hadn't expected this.

No one ever signed to him.

Most people shouted.

Some exaggerated their lip movements.

Others treated him like a child.

Very few even bothered trying.

She simply smiled politely.

Would you like sparkling water or still?

Again, her hands moved with calm confidence.

No hesitation.

No pity.

No performance.

Just respect.

For several seconds...

Salvatore didn't move.

His fingers rested motionless on the leather folder before him.

His bodyguards, stationed silently near the walls, exchanged quick glances.

One of them had worked for him nearly ten years.

He had never seen anyone begin a conversation this way.

Never.

Then...

Slowly...

Salvatore raised his own hands.

His movements were elegant.

Precise.

Beautiful.

Sparkling. Thank you.

Tessa blinked.

She hadn't expected his signing to be so fluent.

Not merely functional.

Native.

Refined.

Like someone who had lived inside silence his entire life.

For the first time in years...

Salvatore noticed the waitress wasn't staring at him with curiosity.

She wasn't looking for scars.

She wasn't studying his expensive suit.

She wasn't calculating how dangerous he might be.

She was simply listening.

With her eyes.

The way deaf people always listened.

Outside the door...

Thirty seconds passed.

Then one minute.

Then two.

Brett frowned.

"What's taking so long?"

A server shrugged.

"Maybe she's frozen."

Another laughed.

"Or maybe he already kicked her out."

They leaned even closer.

Still...

No shouting.

No crying.

No broken dishes.

Nothing.

Inside...

The atmosphere had completely changed.

Tessa poured sparkling water into a crystal glass.

Salvatore watched every movement.

Her hands were rough.

Tiny scars crossed her fingers.

Her wrists carried faint bruises from carrying overloaded trays.

She worked far harder than someone her age should.

Finally, he signed.

Who taught you?

She answered without hesitation.

My younger brother.

A pause.

Then...

No...

She smiled softly.

Life taught me. My brother gave me the reason.

Something flickered behind Salvatore's eyes.

A memory.

A wound.

He looked away.

His jaw tightened.

For several seconds, neither of them signed.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was peaceful.

Almost...

Human.

Then Tessa noticed something.

His hearing aids.

One rested discreetly behind his right ear.

The other was missing.

She glanced toward the table.

Near his papers lay a damaged hearing processor.

Cracked.

Probably from a recent impact.

Without thinking, she signed,

It's broken.

He looked down.

Then nodded once.

Yesterday.

She hesitated.

Then carefully asked,

Does it hurt?

Another pause.

He stared at her as though no one had asked him that question in years.

Not...

"Can you hear?"

Not...

"What's wrong with you?"

Simply...

"Does it hurt?"

His answer came slowly.

Sometimes.

Tessa lowered her eyes.

"So does carrying the whole world," she whispered unconsciously before realizing she'd spoken aloud.

Salvatore couldn't hear the words.

But he read her lips.

Perfectly.

For the first time that evening...

The corners of his mouth moved.

Not quite a smile.

But close enough to make his bodyguards nearly stop breathing.

Outside...

One of Brett's friends whispered,

"I swear... was that... movement?"

"What movement?"

"I think..."

"The boss smiled."

Everyone burst into laughter.

"Impossible."

"Marquetti doesn't smile."

"He barely breathes."

Brett rolled his eyes.

"Open the door a crack."

One waiter slowly pushed it open less than an inch.

All five peeked inside.

Then...

Every face drained of color.

Tessa wasn't being humiliated.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't standing awkwardly.

She was sitting.

Across from Salvatore Marquetti.

Signing.

Fluently.

Calmly.

And...

The feared mafia boss was signing back.

The room looked less like a customer being served...

And more like two old friends sharing a quiet conversation.

"What..."

"No..."

"How is she doing that?"

Brett's stomach twisted.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

Inside, Salvatore suddenly stopped signing.

His eyes shifted.

Toward the barely opened door.

He had noticed the shadow.

The movement.

Someone was watching.

His expression instantly hardened.

Every trace of warmth disappeared.

He slowly turned his head toward the entrance.

The bodyguards followed his gaze.

One stepped silently toward the door.

The waiter outside panicked.

He stumbled backward.

The door slammed shut with a loud bang.

Footsteps exploded down the hallway.

People scattered in every direction.

Inside the room...

Salvatore looked back at Tessa.

His next signs were slow.

Deliberate.

Dangerously calm.

Did someone send you here...

A brief pause.

...or did someone send you to be embarrassed?

Tessa's fingers trembled.

She hadn't wanted to involve him.

But lying to a man whose entire empire depended on reading people was impossible.

After a long silence...

She answered honestly.

They thought you would ignore me.

Another pause.

They wanted everyone to laugh.

The temperature inside the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Salvatore didn't blink.

Didn't move.

Didn't react.

Only the faint tightening of his jaw betrayed what was happening beneath the surface.

His bodyguards recognized the sign immediately.

Someone...

Was about to pay for this.

Salvatore slowly closed the leather folder in front of him.

The quiet click echoed through the room like the hammer of a judge delivering a sentence.

Then he lifted his eyes to Tessa once more.

His hands rose deliberately.

Every movement was calm.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

No one humiliates someone under my roof...

He paused, his gaze turning toward the dining room beyond the door.

Then he completed the sentence.

...and leaves without consequences.

Outside, Brett was still laughing nervously, trying to convince everyone that nothing had happened.

He had no idea...

May you like

The man he had tried to use as a weapon against an innocent waitress had just decided to make the lesson unforgettable.

End of Chapter 2...
