Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Light

Winter arrived softly, blanketing the mountains around the estate in pristine white snow.
For the first time since Clara had passed away three years prior, the Hale estate was fully decorated for the holidays. A massive fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood in the grand living room, adorned with hundreds of twinkling golden lights, colorful ornaments, and homemade paper snowflakes that Amelia had crafted with Dr. Lin during her therapy sessions.
Amelia’s recovery had not happened overnight. There had been nightmares during the first few weeks, nights where she would wake up sobbing, terrified that Vanessa was standing in the dark corner of her room. But every single time, Jonathan had been there. He had slept in an armchair right beside her bed for two straight months, proving to her every night that he was her permanent shield.
Now, six months after that terrifying night in the kitchen, Amelia was a transformed child. Her cheeks had regained their rosy, healthy color. Her laugh, once choked and hesitant, now rang out clear and frequent through the high-ceilinged halls.
"Look, Dad! Look what Oliver did!" Amelia giggled merrily, sitting on the plush rug near the glowing fireplace.
Jonathan stepped out of the kitchen carrying three mugs of warm milk and hot chocolate, accompanied by Eleanor, who was carrying a tray of freshly baked gingerbread cookies.
He looked down at the floor. Baby Oliver, now over a year old, was taking his very first unsteady steps across the rug, wobbling like a tiny penguin toward his big sister. Amelia was clapping her hands gently, encouraging him with sweet whispers.
"Come on, Ollie! You can do it! Come to Amelia!"
Oliver made three shaky steps, let out a loud, triumphant babble, and tumbled safely into Amelia’s waiting arms. Both children burst into fits of laughter, rolling onto the soft rug together.
Jonathan stood near the doorway, watching them. His throat felt tight with a deep, overwhelming emotion that he hadn't felt in years: pure, unadulterated happiness.
"They're doing so well, Mr. Hale," Eleanor said softly, setting the tray of cookies down on the side table. "You've given them their childhood back."
"They gave me my life back, Eleanor," Jonathan replied quietly.
He walked over and sat down on the floor beside his children, handing Amelia her cup of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows.
"Dad?" Amelia asked, taking a small sip and wiping a chocolate mustache from her upper lip.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"Are we going to build a snowman in the yard tomorrow?"
"We are going to build the biggest snowman Cedar Ridge has ever seen," Jonathan smiled, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "And then we're going to build a snow fort, and then we're coming inside for more cookies."

Amelia leaned her head against his shoulder, watching the fire crackle gently in the hearth. "I love our house now, Dad."
"Me too, baby," Jonathan whispered, kissing her forehead. "Me too."
