Chapter 1 - THE OPENED BAND

Eli stood between Luke and the bassinet with both arms spread.

“That isn’t June—Dad switched the babies!”

The words reached me through a haze of pain medication and exhaustion.

I pushed against the hospital mattress, forgetting the fresh incision across my abdomen. Fire tore through my lower body. My IV line pulled tight as I reached toward the clear bassinet Luke was pushing to my bedside.

“Eli, move,” Luke snapped.

“No!”

Luke grabbed our son’s shoulders and dragged him one step back.

The newborn inside the bassinet began crying.

The blanket looked like June’s—white with thin pink stripes—but the baby’s cry sounded sharper than I remembered. I had known my daughter for only fourteen hours. Still, every nerve in my body insisted something was wrong.

“He’s jealous and making this up,” Luke said.

Eli twisted toward me.

“I saw him, Mom.”

Nurse Camille Ross entered at a run.

She placed herself between Luke and the bassinet.

“Do not touch the infant.”

Luke’s hands rose.

“This is my daughter.”

Camille pulled on gloves and examined the ankle band.

The plastic clasp hung partly open.

She turned the electronic tag over and scanned it.

The device flashed red.

Her face changed.

“This identification band has been opened.”

Luke reached forward.

Camille struck his hand away.

“Step back.”

Eli came to my bedside, trembling so violently that the mattress shook when he leaned against it.

“I saw him move two babies and switch their blankets.”

“Where is June?” I whispered.

Luke looked at me.

For one terrible second, I saw no confusion in his face.

Only calculation.

A woman appeared in the doorway pushing an empty bassinet.

She wore a hospital gown and wristband. Her hair was damp with sweat, and one hand clutched the bed rail as though walking had taken everything she had.

She looked at the newborn beside me.

Her mouth opened.

“That’s my baby.”

Camille turned toward her.

The woman pointed with a shaking hand.

“That’s Ava. Where is yours?”

Luke stepped backward.

Camille reached for the emergency button on the wall.

“Code Pink. Postpartum wing. Lock every exit.”

Alarms began sounding beyond the room.

The hallway doors sealed.

Two security officers rushed past the doorway while another entered and ordered Luke against the wall.

My heart hammered so hard that the monitor beside me began beeping.

“Where is June?” I asked again.

Luke said nothing.

Eli stared at him.

“Dad, tell her.”

Camille moved the crying newborn away from all of us and checked the bassinet card.

The card said JUNE MERCER.

The baby did not belong to that name.

Security searched Luke’s pockets. His phone, wallet, and keys went into separate evidence bags.

A folded paper fell from inside his sweater.

Two bassinet numbers had been written on it.

One matched the crib beside my bed.

The other belonged to the woman in the doorway.

Luke looked at the paper, then at me.

“I was trying to put them where they belong.”

The words were soft.

Almost pleading.

But our newborn daughter was missing, and my husband knew exactly why.
