Part 12 — The Last Letter

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain outside continued falling against the windows of the old cottage, but inside, time seemed to stop.

Harold Whitmore stood in front of them like a man who had spent thirty years preparing for a moment he never believed would come.

Audrey looked at the metal box behind him.

The faded words remained visible.

For Audrey Brooks. Open Last.

Her name.

Written decades before she had any idea this secret existed.

"How do you know my name?" Audrey asked.

Harold didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the fireplace and added another piece of wood to the flames.

"Because Daniel Cross knew you would eventually find this."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Daniel died thirty-two years ago."

"Yes."

"Audrey wasn't even born."

Harold looked at him.

"Not everything Daniel planned was about the present."

"Some things were about protecting the future."

The words unsettled Audrey.

She stepped closer.

"Tell me everything."

Harold studied her carefully.

"You sound like him."

"Like who?"

"Daniel."

A faint sadness appeared in his eyes.

"He always believed truth belonged to the people who came after."

They sat around the small wooden table.

For the first time in decades, Harold stopped hiding.

"I was Richard Brooks' legal adviser."

Richard corrected him.

"You were my friend."

Harold looked down.

"That was before I failed you."

The room became quiet.

"Daniel discovered something about the company."

Harold continued.

"Not financial fraud."

"Not corruption."

"Something more dangerous."

Victor leaned forward.

"What?"

"Someone inside the company was manipulating information."

"Before major acquisitions, competitors somehow knew our plans."

Dominic frowned.

"Corporate espionage."

Harold nodded.

"But Daniel found something worse."

"What?"

"He discovered the leaks weren't random."

"They were being used to destroy specific companies."

Audrey listened carefully.

"So someone was using Brooks Global."

"Yes."

"Who?"

Harold looked toward Richard.

"That's the question we never answered."

Richard's frustration finally surfaced.

"Thirty years, Harold."

"You disappeared."

"You let me believe Daniel died because of my mistakes."

Harold lowered his eyes.

"I was trying to protect the evidence."

"You were protecting yourself."

The old man accepted the accusation.

"Maybe."

He walked to a cabinet and removed several files.

Inside were documents Audrey had never seen.

Original acquisition plans.

Private communications.

Handwritten notes.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Mercer Holdings.

Audrey looked at Richard.

"Jonathan?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"But why?"

Harold answered.

"Because Jonathan wasn't trying to destroy Brooks Global."

"He was trying to save it."

Everyone went silent.

That changed everything.

"Explain."

Harold opened another file.

"Jonathan discovered someone was using the company to move money."

"He wanted to expose them."

"But before he could..."

"Daniel died."

Audrey looked confused.

"Then why did Jonathan disappear?"

Harold's face became heavy.

"Because he was blamed."

"By who?"

"By everyone."

The night Daniel died, rumors spread that Jonathan and Richard had fought over control.

Investors panicked.

The friendship between the founders collapsed publicly.

Jonathan became the villain.

Richard became the survivor.

But the truth was different.

"Jonathan received a message that night."

Harold continued.

"It told him Daniel had evidence proving Jonathan was responsible."

"He believed he had been betrayed."

"He ran."

Victor looked at the documents again.

"So someone manipulated both of them."

Harold nodded.

"Exactly."

"Someone created a war between three friends."

Audrey looked at the files.

"Who?"

Harold reached for the metal box.

"I don't know."

"But Daniel did."

The box was placed on the table.

Everyone stared at it.

Harold handed Audrey the key.

"My instructions were clear."

"Only give this to Richard Brooks' daughter."

Richard looked stunned.

"Why my daughter?"

Harold looked at Audrey.

"Because Daniel trusted your judgment."

The lock clicked.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten letter.

A small USB drive.

And an old photograph.

Audrey picked up the photograph first.

It showed Daniel Cross standing beside a young woman.

Margaret Ellis.

Richard recognized her immediately.

"She was there."

Audrey looked at him.

"Where?"

"The night Daniel died."

Harold nodded.

"Margaret knew everything."

"She was the fourth person in the room."

The fourth voice.

The missing piece.

Audrey unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was old but clear.

Her hands trembled slightly as she read.

Audrey,

If you are reading this, it means the people I trusted failed to protect the truth.

She stopped.

The room was completely silent.

She continued.

Your father is not the man they believe him to be.

Richard looked away.

Jonathan Mercer was not my enemy.

And the person who caused this never wanted money.

They wanted something far more dangerous.

Control.

Audrey's eyes moved further down.

Then she froze.

"What?"

Dominic noticed her expression.

"What does it say?"

She looked up slowly.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Daniel knew who did it."

Everyone leaned closer.

"Who?"

Audrey read the next line.

Then the next.

Her face lost color.

"No..."

Richard stood.

"What?"

She turned the letter around.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

A name none of them expected.

A name that changed everything.

Margaret Ellis.

Nobody spoke.

Victor looked confused.

"That doesn't make sense."

"Daniel trusted her."

Richard shook his head.

"She saved us."

Harold's expression was unreadable.

"That is why it was so brilliant."

Audrey looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Harold looked toward the window.

"Because Daniel's final message wasn't an accusation."

"It was a warning."

The USB drive contained only one file.

A video.

Recorded on a small camera decades ago.

The timestamp:

October 14.

The night Daniel Cross died.

Audrey pressed play.

The screen flickered.

A young Daniel appeared.

His face was tired.

His voice quiet.

"If you're watching this..."

"I didn't make it."

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

"The person responsible is not someone outside the company."

"It's someone who knows us."

"Someone we would never suspect."

Then another person entered the frame.

A woman.

Margaret Ellis.

Daniel looked at her.

"You have to tell them."

Margaret's face was filled with fear.

"I can't."

"You know what happens if I do."

Daniel stepped closer.

"If we stay silent, they win."

The recording distorted.

A loud sound came from outside.

Then Margaret whispered something.

Something that made Audrey's blood run cold.

"Your daughter..."

"She's the reason they chose you."

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

This was never only about Brooks Global.

It was never only about revenge.

May you like

Somehow...

Audrey herself had always been part of the plan.
