Chapter 6

The news of the arrests swept through the hospital like a sudden winter draft,

leaving an eerie quiet in the ICU corridor.

Inside Room 408,

the rhythmic chug of the mechanical ventilator was the only sound breaking the silence.

I lay trapped in my own body,

my heavy eyelids partially open,

watching the shadows lengthen across the dim wall.

The poison was slowly clearing from my system thanks to the intensive dialysis,

but the damage to my lungs was severe.

Every artificial breath forced into my chest felt like an iron weight pressing against my ribs.

Around two in the morning,

the hallway outside grew unusually quiet.

The night shift nurses were busy with an emergency admission down the hall,

their footsteps fading into the distance.

Suddenly,

the heavy glass door slid open with a faint,

whispering hiss.

A tall figure glided into the room,

dressed in grey hospital scrubs with a paper mask pulled tight over his mouth and nose.

I thought it was a doctor checking my vital signs,

until I noticed the frantic,

unsteady tremble in his hands.

He didn't check the monitors.

He didn't look at my chart.

Instead,

he reached out toward the clear plastic tube that connected my neck IV to the central line pump.

As the bright hallway light caught his bloodshot eyes above the surgical mask,

a jolt of icy terror shot through my spine.

It was Ray.

He hadn't been processed into the county jail yet;

he had somehow escaped custody during the transfer from the police station lobby,

slipping back into the hospital through the service entrance.

"You shouldn't have woken up,

Emma,"

he whispered,

his voice a raspy,

desperate husk of panic.

"If you talk,

they'll lock me away for the rest of my life,"

he whimpered,

pulling a heavy glass syringe filled with a cloudy,

milky liquid from his pocket.

My heart monitor began to beep wildly.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

I tried to scream,

but the plastic tube locked in my throat rendered me completely silent.

My hands were strapped down to the bed rails with padded safety restraints to prevent accidental extubation.

I struggled against the cloth straps,

my lungs gasping helplessly against the forced rhythm of the ventilator.

Ray attached the syringe to the rubber port of my IV line,

his yellowed teeth bared in a terrifying sneer.

"Just go to sleep,"

he hissed,

pressing his thumb against the plastic plunger.

"It'll all be over in a minute,"

he muttered,

his knuckles turning white as he pushed the fluid closer to my bloodstream.

Suddenly,

the ICU glass door was kicked wide open with a violent crash.

"Get away from her!"

a voice screamed.

It was Daniel,

carrying two paper cups of cafeteria soup,

which shattered on the floor as he lunged across the room.

Daniel tackled Ray with full force,

slamming him against the stainless steel crash cart.

Trays of medical supplies,

needles,

and bandages rained down on the floor with a deafening rattle.

Ray grunted,

swiping wildly at Daniel's face with his sharp fingernails,

cutting a bloody line across Daniel’s cheek.

"Help!"

Daniel bellowed,

pinning Ray's wrists against the cold tile floor with all his body weight.

"Code Pink in Room 408!

Get security in here now!"

The ICU hallway erupted into immediate chaos.

Heavy footsteps thundered down the corridor as four armed hospital security guards rushed through the door.

They tackled Ray,

forcing his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a heavy click.

Ray thrashed on the ground,

foaming at the mouth like a cornered animal,

screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs.

"She ruined everything!"

Ray shrieked as the guards dragged him out into the hall.

"She was supposed to die months ago!"

he screamed into the empty corridor,

his voice fading as they dragged him down the long hallway toward the waiting police cruisers.

Daniel stood beside my bed,

panting heavily,

wiping the blood from his cheek with his sleeve.

He looked down at me,

his hands shaking uncontrollably as he placed them gently over mine.

"You're safe now,

Emma,"

he sobbed,

collapsing into the chair beside my pillow.

"He'll never touch you again,"

he promised,

tears streaming down his worn face.

May you like

"I swear to god,

he will never touch you again."
