CHAPTER 3 – Emily's Secret
The next morning, David drove Emily to school himself.
Instead of dropping her off immediately, he parked near a quiet playground.
"Can we talk?"
Emily nodded.
He handed her a cup of hot chocolate.
She held it carefully with both hands.
"Sweetheart..."
"Has Lauren ever hurt you before yesterday?"
Emily looked out the window.
For nearly a minute...
She said nothing.
Then she whispered,
"Almost every day."
David felt sick.
"What do you mean?"
"When you're at work..."
"She says I make everything dirty."
"She locks me in my room."
"Sometimes she forgets dinner."
He closed his eyes.
"What else?"
Emily pulled back the sleeve of her sweater.
Faint yellow bruises covered her arm.
"She pinches me where nobody can see."
David couldn't speak.
Emily reached into her backpack.
"I wanted to tell you."
She handed him a small notebook.
Inside were dozens of childish drawings.
One showed a smiling father.
One showed a little girl behind a locked bedroom door.
One showed a woman yelling.

The final page simply read:
Please come home early, Daddy.
"I wrote that because..."
Emily's voice cracked.
"I thought maybe if you saw me..."
"...she wouldn't be mean."
David hugged her so tightly she almost spilled the hot chocolate.
"I'm so sorry."
"I should have seen."
Emily buried her face against his shoulder.
"I thought maybe you loved her more."
David broke down.
"There is nothing..."
"Nothing in this world..."
"...that I love more than you."
That afternoon he contacted the police.
Then Child Protective Services.
Then his attorney.
Every recording was copied.
Every bruise photographed.
Every drawing preserved as evidence.
Lauren was arrested before sunset.
She denied everything.

Until investigators played the videos.
She never spoke another word.
