Chapter 14 - The ConversationClaire agreed to meet Daniel in a hospital conference room with Marcus present.

Not alone.

Never alone again.

Daniel arrived early. He stood when Claire entered, then seemed to realize he no longer had the right to perform manners as if manners could cover betrayal.

He sat back down.

Claire took the chair across from him.

Marcus stood by the door.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Daniel looked at Claire’s face as if seeing the damage clearly for the first time. Not bruises. Not visible wounds. Something worse. The kind of exhaustion that changed a person’s age overnight.

“How is he?” Daniel asked.

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“You don’t get to start there.”

Daniel nodded.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I told the truth in court.”

“No. You told facts.”

Daniel looked down.

Claire leaned forward.

“I want the truth underneath them.”

His hands shook.

He clasped them together.

“I was selfish.”

“Too easy.”

“I was having an affair.”

“I knew that.”

His head lifted.

Claire’s smile was faint and devastating.

“I knew for three months.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Claire—”

“I stayed because I thought Noah deserved pancakes on Sundays with both parents. I thought if I waited long enough, you would either leave honestly or come home honestly. Instead, you brought her child into the hospital ahead of ours.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I thought Lily was in danger.”

“Noah was convulsing in my arms.”

“I know.”

“You said he runs fevers all the time.”

“I know.”

“You told them Lily arrived first.”

“I know.”

Her voice cracked for the first time.

“You looked at me, Daniel. I was holding our dying child, and you looked at me before you lied.”

Daniel covered his face.

“I know.”

“No.” Claire stood. “You keep saying that like knowing is punishment enough.”

Daniel lowered his hands.

His face was wet.

“I chose the version of myself Vanessa gave me.”

Claire froze.

He continued, voice breaking.

“With her, I was needed. Respected. Important. At home, you handled everything. Noah trusted me without making me earn it. You trusted me without begging. I turned that into an excuse to feel neglected.”

Claire’s eyes burned.

“I made your strength into my permission to betray you,” he said. “And when the crisis came, I protected the lie because the lie made me feel like a hero. Noah needed a father. I chose to be Vanessa’s hero instead.”

The room went silent.

That was the truth.

Ugly.

Precise.

Unforgivable.

Claire sat slowly.

Daniel whispered, “I am sorry.”

She looked at him.

“Noah tried to say Daddy today.”

Daniel broke so completely Marcus almost stepped forward.

Claire did not.

“He couldn’t finish the word,” she said. “Do you understand? Your son may have to relearn your name because you could not remember your place.”

Daniel bent over, sobbing into his hands.

Claire watched him without comfort.

Then she stood.

“When Noah is medically ready, his therapist will decide whether seeing you is safe. Not you. Not your guilt. Not your mother. Not Vanessa. His therapist.”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll do anything.”

Claire walked to the door.

Before leaving, she turned back.

“No, Daniel. You already did anything.”

May you like

He flinched.

“Now you do exactly what you’re told.”
