Chapter 10 - The Arrival

On a stormy night in mid-April, the rain lashed against the windows of the Newport Community Hospital with furious intensity.

Inside the small delivery room, Amy gripped the metal side rails of the bed, her breath coming in ragged, rhythmic gasps.

"You're fully dilated, Amy," Dr. Helen Miller said calmly from the foot of the bed. "Next contraction, I need a long, steady push."

Beside the bed, wearing sterile blue scrubs, Daniel held Amy’s hand. His grip was strong, steady, his thumb gently smoothing over her knuckles. Sweat soaked his hair, and his eyes never left her face.

"You're doing incredible, my love," Daniel murmured, pressing a cool washcloth to her forehead. "Just breathe with me. In and out."

"It hurts, Daniel," Amy gasped, tears squeezing from her eyes as the next wave of pressure crested.

"I know, sweetheart. Squeeze my hand. Break it if you need to. I'm not going anywhere."

For two hours, Daniel was her anchor. He didn't flinch, he didn't look away, and he didn't speak of anything other than her strength and the beautiful life waiting on the other side of the pain.

At 3:42 AM, a sharp, indignant cry cut through the sound of the storm outside.

"Here she is," Dr. Miller smiled, lifting a squirming, dark-haired baby girl into the warm light. "Healthy, perfect, and loud."

The nurses quickly dried the baby and placed her directly onto Amy’s bare chest.

Amy wrapped her trembling arms around her daughter, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy. "Grace... my sweet Grace."

Daniel stood over them, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, overwhelmed tears. He reached down with one finger, touching the tiny, perfect hand that immediately curled around his thumb with surprising strength.

"Look at her, Amy," Daniel whispered, kissing Amy’s sweat-dampened hair over and over again. "She has your eyes. She has your beautiful eyes."
