Chapter 5 - The Unstoppable Truth

The trial was the shortest in Bennett Street history. With the recorder, the letter, and the testimony of a child who had finally been heard, there was no narrative Sarah could spin. The "perfect family" was exposed as a syndicate of lies, and the respected mother was revealed to be a cold-blooded opportunist.

Caitlyn lived with her father now, in a small, quiet house by the coast. The nightmares still came, but they were fewer.

One evening, they sat on the porch, watching the waves roll in. Caitlyn had her old boot on the table—the shell of the secret that had saved her life.

"Do you think she’ll ever tell the truth?" Caitlyn asked, looking at the horizon.

"It doesn't matter," David said, putting an arm around her. "The truth is out, Caitlyn. You’re the one who told it. You don't need her version of the story anymore."

Caitlyn picked up the old boot. It was worn, dirty, and falling apart, but it was the most beautiful thing she had ever owned. She set it on the porch railing and watched as a gust of wind caught it, turning it over in the light.

She wasn't "difficult." She wasn't "dramatic." She was simply free.

The house on Bennett Street was eventually torn down, the land cleared for something new. People stopped talking about the "perfect Monroe family" and started talking about the girl who survived the smoke.

Caitlyn leaned her head on her father’s shoulder, closing her eyes. She heard the wind, the waves, and the sound of her own heart—steady, strong, and finally her own. The secret was out, the fire was extinguished, and for the first time in her life, Caitlyn Monroe was breathing air that wasn't filled with ash.
