Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF CHICAGO

The rain came down in blinding sheets as midnight turned into a full-scale war across the city of Chicago.
Inside the Marchetti estate, the peaceful silence had been replaced by the tactical chaos of an empire under attack. Forty heavily armed Marchetti operatives lined the perimeter walls, their assault rifles pointed out into the dark treeline. Snipers were stationed on the roof of the manor, their infrared scopes sweeping the foggy driveway.
Inside the war room on the ground floor, Enzo stood over a large digital map table displaying real-time satellite feeds of the city.
Beside him, Dante was bandaging a bleeding shrapnel wound on his shoulder.
"It's a shadow coalition, boss," Dante explained, pointing at three red flashing dots on the map. "Remnants of the Ashford syndicate, backed by a rogue mercenary faction from Detroit called the Iron Crows. They know we stripped the Ashfords of their port permits, so they're burning our commercial warehouses to force a vote of no-confidence within the Commission."
Adeline stood near the doorway, wrapped in a black tactical jacket that Dante had given her for protection. She watched Enzo move across the room with the lethal, methodical grace of a panther preparing for a hunt.
"They think they can use Adeline as a leverage point," Enzo said, his voice cold as a winter grave. "They think because she’s a civilian, I will fold."
"Enzo," Adeline stepped forward, her voice clear despite the terror knotting her stomach. "If they want me... use me as bait."
The entire room went dead silent.
Dante stopped wrapping his bandage, staring at her in shock. Three senior lieutenants standing near the weapons rack turned their heads slowly.
Enzo turned around slowly, his dark eyes locking onto her with a terrifying intensity.
"What did you just say?" Enzo asked softly.
"They think I'm a weak link," Adeline said, stepping up to the map table. "They think I'm an innocent servant who will scream and panic. If you send a convoy out through the south gate pretending to transport me to a safe house, the Iron Crows will attack that convoy."
She pointed at a narrow choke point on the digital map—an abandoned industrial underpass near 12th Street.
"You draw them into the underpass," Adeline continued, her nursing training kicking in as her mind analyzed the tactical geography with sharp, cold precision. "You seal both ends with heavy armored trucks. You eliminate their leadership in ten minutes without risking a prolonged war in the city streets."
Dante stared at the map, then looked up at Adeline with newfound, profound respect. "Jesus Christ... the girl is right, boss. That underpass is a kill-box."
"No," Enzo said flatly.
"Enzo, it's the fastest way to end this without more innocent people dying!" Adeline insisted, stepping closer, reaching out to touch his arm. "If this war drags on, hospitals will be overwhelmed. The city will be locked down. My grandmother's facility—"
"I will not use you as bait!" Enzo roared, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls of the war room, his emotional control finally snapping.
He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her face six inches from his. His dark eyes were wild, filled with a raw, primal terror that no enemy syndicate had ever managed to evoke in him.
"I spent five years building an empire so I would never have to compromise!" Enzo growled, his thumb pressing deeply into her shoulder jacket. "I will burn every warehouse in Chicago to ash before I put you in a car to be shot at!"
"Enzo..." Adeline whispered, touching his jaw with her warm hand, feeling the rigid tension in his muscles. "Look at me."
Enzo breathed heavily, his dark eyes searching hers.
"I trust you," Adeline whispered softly. "I know you won't let them hurt me. But you have to trust me too. I am not a fragile piece of glass, Enzo. I survived three years watching my family fall apart. I survived Camilla’s whip. Let me help you protect our home."
'Our home.'
The words hung in the air like a sacred vow.
Enzo’s grip on her shoulders slowly softened. He closed his eyes for two long seconds, fighting an internal war between his ruthless tactical mind and his overwhelming, protective devotion to the woman in front of him.
When he opened his eyes, the wild terror was gone, replaced by a cold, absolute resolve.
"Dante," Enzo commanded, never taking his eyes off Adeline.
"Yes, boss?"
"Prepare the heavy convoy," Enzo ordered. "We use the decoy. But I am riding in the lead car with Adeline."
Dante smiled grimly. "Understood, boss."
Enzo raised his hand, gently cupping Adeline's cheek, his thumb tracing her jawline.

"If a single bullet hits the glass near your head tonight, Adeline," Enzo murmured softly, "I will execute every mercenary in Detroit by morning."
Adeline offered him a small, fearless smile. "Then make sure your snipers don't miss."
