Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The private jet climbed steadily into the bruised twilight sky above the Costa del Sol, banking northward toward Madrid. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a study in absolute contrasts. In the forward VIP lounge, Alejandro sat at a polished mahogany desk strewn with legal documents, financial reports, and architectural blueprints of his upcoming projects. His laptop screen cast a cool, blue light across his stern features as he communicated with his chief legal counsel in Madrid.
In the aft section of the cabin, Isabella sat curled up in a plush leather armchair, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Her bandaged hands rested gingerly on a small tablet where a cartoon played softly, though her eyes were frequently drawn to her father. She still carried the quiet, watchful stillness of a child who had lived too long in fear, but the constant, guarded tension in her shoulders had begun to ease.
Across the aisle sat Elena Vance, a senior family law specialist and child psychologist whom Alejandro had hastily retained and flown down to Marbella. Elena was speaking softly to Isabella, asking gentle, open-ended questions about her daily routine over the past three months.
"And when your mother wasn't letting you use the main kitchen, where did you eat, sweetheart?" Elena asked, her voice warm and steady.
"In the utility room," Isabella whispered, not looking up from her screen. "Or outside on the patio if I finished my chores early. Mom said if I tracked dirt inside the house while my clothes were dirty, I had to scrub the entire kitchen floor with a toothbrush."
Elena’s pen scratched quietly across her notepad. She did not express shock, nor did she offer hollow reassurances; she simply recorded the facts with clinical precision. Across the cabin, Alejandro heard every word. Each syllable dropped into his chest like molten lead, searing away any lingering doubt about whether he had acted too harshly toward Beatriz.
He closed his laptop with a quiet snap and walked back to where Isabella sat. Kneeling beside her chair, he placed a gentle hand on her knee.
"Isabella," he said softly. "When we land in Madrid, we are going to stay at the penthouse downtown for a few days. I know it's not the villa, but we'll have our own space. No one will tell you what to do, no one will yell at you, and you will never, ever have to go back to that garden."
Isabella looked at him, her large, dark eyes searching his face as if testing the reality of his promise. "Will mom be there?"
"No," Alejandro said firmly. "Your mother will be staying elsewhere. She has a lot of legal paperwork to sort out with her lawyers."
"Are you going to divorce her?" Isabella asked, the question hanging in the air with the tragic maturity of a child forced to grow up decades ahead of schedule.
Alejandro hesitated for a fraction of a second, then nodded. "Yes, Isabella. Some things are broken beyond repair, and the only way forward is to build something new from the foundation up."
Three hours later, the private jet touched down at Madrid-Barajas Airport under a heavy, rain-slicked night sky. A black armored Mercedes limousine waited on the tarmac, its headlights cutting through the fine mist. Within twenty minutes, they were gliding through the quiet, affluent streets of central Madrid toward Alejandro’s private penthouse overlooking the Plaza de Cibeles.
The penthouse was a masterpiece of modern minimalism—vast open spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished concrete floors, and warm walnut accents. It was a place Alejandro had designed as a sanctuary from the relentless pressures of his corporate empire, a fortress of solitude where he could think, plan, and execute his projects without interference.
As soon as they entered, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes and a welcoming smile stepped forward from the private foyer. It was Rosa—the former head housekeeper of the Marbella estate whom Beatriz had supposedly fired and silenced months ago.
"Isabella! Oh, my sweet angel," Rosa gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she saw the white bandages wrapped tightly around the little girl's hands. Without hesitation, Rosa dropped to her knees and gently embraced Isabella, who buried her face in the housekeeper's shoulder and let out a long, shuddering sob—the first real cry of release since Alejandro had found her in the garden.
Alejandro stood back, watching the quiet reunion with a heavy heart. He looked at Rosa over Isabella's small head. "You knew, didn't you, Rosa?"
Rosa looked up, tears shining in her eyes. She stood slowly, holding Isabella's hand protectively. "I suspected, Señor Alejandro, but I was powerless. Señora Beatriz threatened that if I ever contacted you or returned to the property, she would ensure I never worked in Spain again, and she had the social connections to ruin me. But the moment you called me from Marbella today and told me you were coming home... I knew it was finally over."
"It is over," Alejandro said, his voice hard as iron. "She will never touch my daughter again. Prepare the guest suite next to mine for Isabella. I want her close."
As Rosa led Isabella down the long, warm hallway toward the bedrooms, Alejandro walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the glittering lights of Madrid slicked with rain. His phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw an encrypted message from his lead investigator in Marbella.
The message contained a single PDF document and a short text: “Señor Vance, we pulled the security camera logs from the villa's perimeter gates for the past ninety days. You need to see who visited Beatriz while you were in Dubai.”
Alejandro unlocked his tablet, downloaded the file, and opened the video logs. The first file timestamped two months ago showed a luxury sports car pulling into the private driveway of the Marbella villa. The driver stepped out, and Alejandro's breath caught sharply in his throat.

It was not a delivery driver. It was Sergio Delgado—the chief financial officer of Alejandro's primary rival real estate firm in Valencia, a man with whom Alejandro had been locked in a bitter multi-million-euro land acquisition battle for the past year.
Alejandro watched the video in stunned silence as Sergio Delgado embraced Beatriz at the front entrance, walking familiarly into the home that Alejandro’s labor had built.
