Chapter 20 - Freedom Secured

Six months later,

the courtroom was quiet,

as the judge banged his gavel.

"John Carter, alias Ethan Lawson,"

"is sentenced to twenty-five years,"

"in a federal penitentiary."

I sat in the front row,

holding Jessica's hand,

feeling a massive weight lift from my chest.

Ethan didn't look at me,

as they led him away in chains.

He was broken,

his money gone,

his freedom lost forever.

Claire had taken a plea deal,

serving five years for her part in the fraud.

My father lost his law license,

his house,

and his reputation,

awaiting his own sentencing.

They all paid the price,

for their greed.

I walked out of the courthouse,

into the bright spring sunshine.

The air felt clean,

fresh,

and full of promise.

I drove back to our new home,

a small cottage,

far away from Columbus.

It wasn't grand,

but it was ours,

bought with my own hard-earned money,

freed from the legal mess.

Noah was playing in the front yard,

running through the green grass,

laughing as he chased a butterfly.

He looked healthy,

happy,

and safe.

I walked up to him,

kneeling down,

pulling him into a warm hug.

"Mommy,"

he said,

showing me a yellow flower.

"For you."

"Thank you, sweetie,"

I whispered,

tears of pure joy filling my eyes.

I looked up at the blue sky,

breathing in the sweet air.

We had survived the nightmare.

We had beaten the lies.

And now,

May you like

finally,

our real life was beginning.
