Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Arthur Vance

The grand lobby of the Franklin County Courthouse was a swirling vortex of reporters, camera crews, and legal flashbulbs.
As I stepped out of the private elevator accompanied by Eleanor Vance and Detective Parker, a wall of microphones and flashing lights immediately surged forward, blocking our path.
“Ms. Vance! Ms. Vance! Is it true that Dominic Vance is facing up to fifteen years in federal prison?” “Did Arthur Vance actively participate in the financial cover-up?” “How does it feel to dismantle one of the most powerful legal dynasties in Columbus?”
I held up my left hand, keeping my bandaged right hand tucked securely in my pocket, and stepped up to the podium set up by the courthouse steps. The sea of flashing cameras instantly intensified, turning the grey afternoon into a strobe-lit stage.
“For eighteen months, I was told that what happened behind closed doors belonged behind closed doors,” I said into the wall of microphones, my voice steady, clear, and carrying across the entire plaza. “I was told that abuse was a private family matter, that my voice didn't matter, and that my success belonged to men who did nothing more than take credit for my work.”
I looked directly into the camera lenses, knowing that Arthur, Victoria, and Dominic were likely watching the live broadcast from their respective holding cells and disgraced living rooms across the city.
“Let today be a message to anyone trapped in silence,” I continued, my voice ringing with absolute power. “You are not invisible. You are not powerless. And no matter how powerful someone’s name is, no matter how many legal loopholes they think they control, truth and evidence will always break through the dark. The legal dynasty of Arthur Vance wasn't destroyed by me—it collapsed because it was built on sand.”
Behind me, Eleanor Vance offered a proud, approving nod, while Detective Parker crossed her arms with a quiet, satisfied smile.
“As for my future,” I concluded, stepping away from the podium, “I am officially filing the incorporation papers for the Phoenix Foundation—a non-profit legal and technical advocacy center dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence secure digital evidence, financial independence, and complete legal freedom.”

The applause from the crowd of reporters and onlookers drowned out the remaining questions as we walked down the courthouse steps, stepping past the bronze pillars and out toward a waiting car.
The nightmare was officially behind me. The horizon was entirely mine.
