Chapter 6 - SYBIL’S PLAN BEFORE THE DEATH
Natalie’s death was sudden.
Documented.
A pulmonary embolism four days after knee surgery.
No suspicious circumstances.
No hidden poisoning.
No Ashford involvement.
That mattered.
Sybil had not caused the event she later exploited.
So why did she submit school information six weeks earlier?
Because Natalie had been scheduled for surgery.
Routine.
She asked Gavin to serve as emergency contact for Avery during recovery.
Sybil interpreted temporary contingency as opportunity.
An email:
SYBIL:
You should have a school option near you in case Natalie’s recovery becomes complicated.
GAVIN:
She’ll be fine.
SYBIL:
Prepared people do not assume.
Gavin apparently ignored the school inquiry after that.
Sybil did not.
She requested admissions packet.
Housing proof.
Pickup authorization requirements.
Then our floor plan.
A handwritten note recovered from her planner:
Avery — Tobin room.
Tobin — storage / later playroom.
Sybil — guest.
Office remains Gavin.
She had ranked every space.
I stared at the line:
Office remains Gavin.
Even her son’s work mattered more than Tobin’s bedroom.
Then another note:
Brenna will object. Do after arrival.
There.
She planned to present me with an accomplished fact.
When Gavin found out Natalie had died, he called Sybil first.
Not me.
Phone log.
Twenty-three-minute conversation.
Then Rachel.
Then attorney.
Then me?
He came home and told me Natalie Morgan had been “an old friend who died.”
That was all.
I remembered.
He seemed distracted that evening.
I asked:
“Were you close?”
He said:
“A long time ago.”
True enough to be deceptive.
Three days later, custody petition.
Then boxes.
Then Sybil.
Then slap.
The timeline was not panic over hours.
It was controlled concealment.
Then financial records showed Sybil had her own motive for integrating Avery quickly.
The Ashford Descendant Education Trust.
Created by Gavin’s late father, Malcolm Ashford.
Beneficiaries:
All legally acknowledged biological or adopted descendants of Gavin’s generation.
No “firstborn gets everything.”
Equal support subject to needs.
Avery had not been listed publicly because her parentage remained privately acknowledged through sealed documents.
But Sybil, acting as family administrative liaison, had been submitting educational support requests for her for years.
Not theft.
Avery was eligible if paternity was established according to trust terms.
Commonwealth Fiduciary paid tuition reimbursements after receiving sealed certification.
Why was I never told?
I was not trustee.
Not beneficiary.
No legal requirement.
Still.
Sybil had managed a second granddaughter—actually granddaughter, while Tobin grandson—for years as administrative secret.
She had developed a mythology.
Avery was:
“The first Ashford grandchild.”
Tobin was:
“The public one.”
I found that phrasing in a message to Gavin.
SYBIL:
Avery has spent eight years hidden so Tobin could have the visible family.
GAVIN:
That is not Brenna’s fault.
SYBIL:
No, it is yours.
That was true.
Then:
SYBIL:
When Avery comes, she should not enter as second class.
GAVIN:
Agreed.
That agreement frightened me.
What did “not second class” mean?
To Sybil:
Best room.
Family photographs.
Ashford surname.
Private school.
Trust support.
Maybe all fair if chosen appropriately.
But equality built by demoting another child is not equality.
Then one more document.
Sybil had drafted a proposed family announcement.
GAVIN ASHFORD WELCOMES ELDEST DAUGHTER INTO FAMILY HOME FOLLOWING TRAGIC LOSS OF HER MOTHER.
ElDEST.
Public.
Why?
Image.
Sybil had hidden Avery for eight years, then suddenly wanted to unveil her once she could control the narrative.
Her plan transformed secrecy into a family redemption story.
Gavin would be the father stepping up.
Sybil the grandmother restoring rightful place.
Where did that leave Brenna?
Not mentioned.
Tobin?
One line:
Gavin and Brenna’s young son Tobin will welcome his older sister.
I laughed.
According to Sybil, I would participate after the fact.
Then Rachel’s attorney sent another document.
A letter Natalie wrote three months before death.
To Gavin.
Not opened in court yet.
Subject:
NO MORE HIDING AFTER THIS SUMMER.
Natalie had decided Avery would no longer remain secret regardless of Gavin’s comfort.
Gavin had responded.
Not with agreement.
