Chapter 4 - The Shadow over the Kitchen

By two o'clock that afternoon, the atmosphere inside the Moretti estate had transformed completely.
The silent, dormant mansion had become an operational war room. Four heavy black SUVs were parked in the rear courtyard, their engines idling. Eight armed security operatives dressed in tactical grey suits were deployed along the perimeter walls, while Mateo set up a mobile satellite communications suite inside my private study.
In the kitchen, Sophia stood near the center island, clutching five-year-old Emma against her hip. Her eyes were wide with terror as she watched tactical guards walk past the high windows.
I stepped into the kitchen, having shed my dark coat for a sharp black suit and a holster worn beneath my jacket.
"Sophia," I said gently, stepping over to the island.
Sophia pulled Emma tighter against her chest, her voice trembling. "Mr. Moretti... what is happening? Are those men here for us? Did... did someone find out about Thomas's book?"
I reached out, setting a gentle hand on Emma’s small shoulder. The little girl looked up at me with her big, innocent brown eyes, her thumb wedged comfortably in her mouth.
"No one is going to harm you or Emma, Sophia," I said, my voice firm and absolute. "I read Thomas’s ledger. Your husband was a brave, honorable man. He tried to stop monsters, and those monsters took his life."
Sophia let out a ragged sob, burying her face in Emma’s hair. "I knew it... I knew he didn't just fall off that beam..."
"Thomas saved my life, Sophia," I continued, looking directly into her eyes. "Even though it came three years too late to save my wife and daughter, his words have given me the truth. I promise you on the graves of my family, Julian Vance will pay for what he did to Thomas, and what he did to us."
I turned to Mateo, who was standing by the kitchen archway holding a secure satellite phone.
"Is the safehouse in Vermont ready?" I asked.
"Yes, boss," Mateo replied. "Fully armored, off-grid, and guarded by six of our best men. An armored transport is waiting at the rear gate."
I looked back at Sophia. "I am sending you and Emma to Vermont today. You will be completely safe there. Full medical care, private schooling for Emma, and a security detail around the clock."
Sophia shook her head tearfully. "Mr. Moretti... I can't afford—"
"You will never worry about rent, money, or safety for the rest of your life, Sophia," I interrupted gently. "You are under the protection of Moretti Logistics now. Forever."
Suddenly, Emma reached out from her mother’s arms, her tiny hand patting my cheek.
"Mr. Moretti," Emma whispered, her small voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room. "Are you going to fix the sad parts now?"
I looked down at the little girl who had watered a photograph in my dead daughter’s garden four hours ago—the girl whose innocent tin cup had shattered three years of lies.
May you like
I took her small hand in mine, kissing the back of her tiny fingers.
"Yes, Emma," I promised softly. "I'm going to fix the sad parts."
