Chapter 9 - THE PERFUME, THE FIREPLACE, AND THE DUST
Asthma triggers are messy.
You cannot usually look at one wheeze and say:
This caused it.
Juniper reacted to:
Viral infections.
Heavy pollen.
Smoke.
Strong fragrance.
Dust.
Sometimes exercise.
Sometimes no obvious trigger.
Tabitha wore perfume.
Orson used fireplace.
Neither automatically criminal.
Then Willa remembered Memorial Day.
“Tabitha sprayed something in the guest room.”
“What?”
“Fabric perfume.”
Normal household product.
Juniper coughed afterward.
Tabitha moved her into the room anyway.
Was that deliberate trigger?
Maybe.
Then lake rental.
Campfire.
Juniper’s action plan explicitly said avoid smoke.
Tabitha insisted:
“She can sit upwind.”
Could be poor judgment.
Then party.
Fireplace on.
Strong perfume.
But the damning conduct remained withholding rescue medicine, not necessarily creating triggers.
Prosecutor refused to charge intentional poisoning or deliberate asthma induction without stronger proof.
Good.
Then laptop search produced a web search:
how long child wheezing before ER
scary.
Also:
asthma attack oxygen level when hospitalization
Then:
medical neglect custody rescue inhaler
But internet searches show curiosity, not acts.
Combined with video:
“Let her get worse first.”
Much stronger.
Then a note:
Need documented exacerbation requiring professional care.
That was enough to support theory she wanted a serious event.
But did she intend Juniper to suffer? Yes, by deliberate delay. How long? Need evidence.
At family party, Willa’s video showed 4 minutes 11 seconds between first audible wheeze and Corbin entering? Tabitha had taken inhaler 26 min earlier but wheeze began later. Orson tried to intervene at about 2 minutes. Tabitha blocked. Willa herself didn't physically take inhaler, which she regrets. Corbin arrived after 4 min. Would that cause harm? Could be dangerous, though not severe injury. She was planning to wait longer if Corbin didn't arrive.
Easter footage: delay around 3 minutes.
Memorial Day: unknown, perhaps 7 minutes.
No hospital except party? We can have urgent care incident from empty inhaler. But it might have been Tabitha's replacement sitting in cabinet. She may have planned that.
Then police found a text to Orson on that day:
TABITHA:
Don't run to pharmacy yet. If she needs urgent care, let them document no inhaler.
Orson:
Absolutely not.
Tabitha:
You said you wanted Corbin home more.
Orson:
Not like this.
He then went to urgent care.
But did he know fresh inhaler was at Tabitha's? No.
That supports intentional withholding.
The central secret could now be confirmed in Ch10: She deliberately engineered at least three attacks/delays to manufacture medical-neglect record and trigger CPS/temporary kinship placement before Raleigh move. Great.
Before reveal, Ch9 can end with actual draft from her laptop:
PLAN AFTER REMOVAL
Tabitha intended to seek placement.
Need not spell everything? Could mention file exists but not contents until 10. Let's write.
Rowan called me into office.
He had a printed forensic report.
“Found a document.”
“Another log?”
“No.”
“What?”
“Created six weeks ago.”
Title:
IF TEMPORARY REMOVAL OCCURS.
My hands went cold.
Rowan did not hand it to me immediately.
“Before you read it, understand this is Tabitha’s planning document, not an order. No agency approved it. No court endorsed it.”
“Okay.”
“It lays out what she wanted to happen if Juniper was removed from your care.”
I looked through the glass wall toward Willa, waiting outside.
My father beside her.
Orson had been allowed no contact with Juniper but was cooperating fully.
“Does it say why she was taking the inhaler?”
Rowan’s face answered before words.
“Yes.”
The prosecutor had finally authorized the full theory.

And the secret Tabitha had been building for eight months would no longer be hidden inside a blue binder.
