Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the Shadows

Years passed, as they always do in a city that never sleeps, never pauses, and never truly forgives.
The gray in my hair turned completely white, and the old scars from long-forgotten turf wars began to ache whenever a cold autumn rain rolled off the Atlantic. The empire I built didn't crumble; instead, it evolved. It transformed from a predatory syndicate into something far more enduring—a quiet, disciplined institution that maintained the peace of the streets not through random violence, but through absolute, unyielding order.
And through it all, Bruno remained by my side.
He slowed down eventually, his muzzle turning completely gray, his massive frame growing heavier and stiffer with age. But his eyes never lost that sharp, piercing clarity that had seen right through a murderer standing in a quiet funeral home years ago.
When his time finally came, it wasn't on a battlefield, in an alleyway, or during a negotiation. It happened on a quiet Sunday afternoon on the porch of the upstate estate, with the warm autumn sun beating down on his back and my hand resting right where it always belonged—firmly on his thick, loyal neck.
We didn't bury him in the pet cemetery behind the stables.
Instead, we laid him to rest beneath the large oak tree overlooking the gardens, right beside a small, hand-carved white wooden plaque bearing a single sentence that every enforcer, boss, and soldier in our organization knew by heart:
Here lies Bruno. The most loyal soldier in the empire, who taught us that true strength is standing guard over the innocent.
On the anniversary of Elena Vasquez's passing every year, a fresh bouquet of purple irises and a small box of chocolate ice cream would mysteriously appear on the stone retaining wall of the Queens park playground. No one ever saw who left them. No one ever asked.

The men in the organization simply nodded when they walked past, knowing that some debts can never be fully repaid, and some truths can never be buried.
And out in the dark, pulsing heart of the city, the shadows remained disciplined, quiet, and fiercely protected—guarded forever by the memory of a little girl in purple sneakers and the mafia boss's dog who refused to leave her side.
