Chapter 4 - THE CHECKMATE PROCEDURE

The silence in the penthouse was absolute, broken only by the frantic, ragged gasps of Julian Mercer, who looked like he was about to suffer a massive coronary on his velvet sofa.
"How... how are you alive?" Evelyn Reed stammered, backing up against the wet bar until her spine hit the granite counter. "Three thousand feet... over open water... nobody survives that!"
"A standard human body doesn't," I agreed, walking calmly toward the center of the room and sitting down in the high-backed leather armchair that Julian usually reserved for himself. "But a woman who knew her husband was shopping for black-market nerve agents and researching helicopter door safety mechanisms six weeks ago? She doesn't jump into an aircraft without a parachute."
Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. "You... you knew?"
"Of course I knew, Richard," I said, leaning back and resting my hands over my stomach. "Did you really think you were subtle? You started asking for access to my Swiss holding accounts three days after my morning sickness began. You spent hours in your study reviewing my father’s corporate bylaws, trying to find a clause that granted a surviving spouse immediate executive voting rights in the event of an unrecovered body."
Richard took a panicked step toward me, his hands raised pleadingly. "Amelia... sweetheart... listen to me! It was a mistake! I... I had a psychotic break! I wasn't in my right mind! The stress of the pregnancy, the financial pressures—"
"Save it for your public defender, Richard," I cut him off, my tone dropping into an icy register that made him freeze in his tracks. "You don't get to use our child as an excuse for your cowardice."
I turned my eyes to Julian Mercer, who was sweating so profusely his expensive hair gel was running down his forehead.
"Julian," I said smoothly. "At four o'clock this afternoon, while you were busy drafting fake board resolutions, my forensic audit team seized every server in your department. We found the offshore accounts in Macau. We found the eight hundred million dollars in missing corporate funds you diverted to cover Richard’s crypto losses."
Julian collapsed onto his knees, burying his face in his hands. "Amelia... please... I was forced! Richard threatened to expose my gambling debts to the SEC! I had no choice!"
"We all have choices, Julian," I said softly. "You chose to bet on a murderer."
I looked over at Evelyn Reed. "And Evelyn... our brilliant legal counsel. Did you really think I didn't notice the modified liability clauses you slipped into my estate portfolio last month? I replaced those documents with certified originals three weeks ago. Every asset, every patent, every cent of Hayes Global is locked inside an irrevocable trust that transfers ninety-nine percent of its voting power to a non-profit foundation managed by the Federal Reserve in the event of my death. Even if Richard had succeeded, he would have inherited nothing but a pile of personal debt and a mountain of lawsuits."
Evelyn stared at me in stunned horror. "You... you set us up."
"I gave you enough rope to hang yourselves," I corrected her. "And you executed the maneuver flawlessly."
Richard suddenly dropped his pleading stance. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. He realized that every legal, financial, and physical angle had been completely cut off. The charm was gone. The fake husband was gone. All that remained was a desperate, cornered rat.
"You think you've won?" Richard snarled, reaching behind his back toward a heavy bronze statuette resting on the side table. "You walk in here with a few guards thinking you can humiliate me? I'll kill you right here! I'll break your neck with my own hands!"
He lunged forward, raising the heavy bronze statuette high above his head, aiming directly for my skull.
He didn't make it two feet.
Marcus stepped forward with terrifying speed, slamming a heavy tactical baton into Richard’s kneecap with a sickening CRACK.
Richard screamed in agony, his leg collapsing beneath him as he crashed face-first onto the hard floor, dropping the statuette. Before he could recover, Marcus pinned his head to the rug with a heavy combat boot, twisting Richard’s arm behind his back until his shoulder joint popped out of its socket with a sharp snap.
"Stay down, piece of garbage," Marcus growled, slipping a set of reinforced steel handcuffs over Richard’s wrists.
Richard sobbed into the carpet, blood dripping from his nose, his body convulsing in pain and defeat.
I stood up from the armchair, walking slowly over to where my husband lay broken on the floor. I crouched down beside him, grabbing him by his hair and pulling his face up so he was forced to look me directly in the eyes.
"You tried to throw me out of a helicopter, Richard," I whispered, my voice calm, steady, and terrifyingly clear. "You tried to murder the mother of your child for money that wasn't even yours. Did you really think I would let you die quickly?"
I let go of his hair, letting his head drop back onto the carpet, and stood up to address Marcus.
"Are the federal authorities outside?"
May you like
"They just breached the lobby, ma'am," Marcus replied, checking his radio. "FBI, SEC, and the San Francisco Police Homicide Division. They have full search warrants for the building and arrest warrants for all four individuals."
"Good," I said, taking my trench coat from the chair. "Tell them to take their time. I have a press conference to catch."
