Chapter 4 - The Escalation & The Siege of Beacon Hill

By Wednesday afternoon, the media storm had descended upon the Montgomery family with the fury of a hurricane.

Headline stories across the Boston Globe and national financial news outlets blared across television screens: "MONTGOMERY DEVELOPMENT COLLAPSES INTO MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD INVESTIGATION; CEO ACCUSED OF EMBEZZLEMENT AND CHILD ABUSE."

The Boston Police Department had formally issued an arrest warrant for Arthur Montgomery for felony child abuse and assault on a minor, based on the emergency room forensic report and security camera footage retrieved from my parents' Brookline driveway that captured the audio of Gigi’s terrified screams.

Deprived of his corporate accounts, facing bank freezes, and hunted by both the law and creditors, Arthur had completely unraveled.

It was 8:00 PM on Thursday evening. Rain was pouring down in sheets over Beacon Hill, drumming loudly against the historic glass windows of my townhouse.

I was sitting in the living room, reading a bedtime story to Gigi, who was happily pointing at pictures of farm animals, her smile entirely restored, the mark on her cheek fading under pediatric ointment.

Suddenly, a loud, violent pounding echoed from the heavy oak front door downstairs.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Clara! Open the damn door!" Arthur’s voice roared from the street, slurred and crazed with alcohol and desperation. "Open this door right now, you traitorous bitch!"

Gigi gasped, her little hands instantly wrapping around my neck, her eyes wide with terror. "Mommy... sca'ed..."

"Shh, baby. Mommy's got you. You are completely safe," I whispered softly into her hair, placing her gently into the secure playpen inside my locked bedroom upstairs.

I walked down the grand mahogany staircase, pulling my phone from my pocket. On the smart security monitor mounted near the entry foyer, I could see Arthur standing on my front porch in the pouring rain. His suit was soaked, his eyes bloodshot, clutching a heavy metal crowbar in his right hand.

Behind him stood my parents, Charles and Victoria, huddling under a single umbrella, watching their son prepare to break down my door.

"Clara!" my father shouted through the heavy wood. "Open the door and drop the criminal complaints! The state police were at our house today! They are going to lock Arthur up! Do you understand what you're doing to us?!"

"You are destroying your father’s legacy!" Victoria wailed, her voice cracking against the sound of the rain. "He spent his entire life building this name! How can you sleep at night knowing your brother is facing ten years in prison?!"

I picked up the intercom receiver on the wall, my voice echoing loudly through the porch speakers outside.

"Arthur," I said calmly. "Drop the crowbar and step off my property. The Boston Police Department SWAT and patrol units were dispatched three minutes ago when you stepped past my front gate. You are on high-definition video carrying a weapon."

"I don't give a damn about the police!" Arthur screamed, raising the crowbar and slamming it against the heavy wooden door frame, splintering the polished trim. "You ruined my life! You took my money! You took my company! All over that little brat!"

"She is my daughter," I said, my voice dropping an octave into pure velvet thunder. "And you will never, ever put terror in her heart again."

"Open the door!" Arthur bellowed, raising the iron bar again to smash the glass panel.

Before the crowbar could swing down a second time, blinding red and blue lights illuminated the rain-slicked street of Beacon Hill. Four police cruisers tore around the corner, tires screeching against the cobblestones.

"BOSTON POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!" officers yelled through megaphones, jumping out of their vehicles with sidearms drawn.

Arthur froze, the crowbar suspended in mid-air. He looked around in utter shock, his drunken confidence evaporating into thin air as six police officers swarmed the porch.

"Get on the ground! On your stomach! NOW!"

Within seconds, Arthur was slammed onto the wet stone steps, his face pressed against the cold granite, hands yanked behind his back and secured in heavy steel handcuffs.

"Dad! Mom! Help me! Stop them!" Arthur shrieked like a terrified child, crying into the rain as the steel clicked tight around his wrists.

My mother dropped her designer handbag into a puddle, dropping to her knees on the sidewalk, screaming, "Don't touch him! He's my son! Take her instead! She’s the one who caused this!"

My father stood frozen in the rain, his walking cane slipping from his hand, watching his golden son being shoved into the back of a police cruiser in full view of news vans that had just pulled onto the street.

Through the reinforced glass of my second-story window, I looked down at the pathetic spectacle. I held Gigi tightly in my arms, resting her head against my chest, covering her ears so she wouldn't hear her uncle screaming as the police car drove away into the night.
