Chapter 7 - My Mother’s Ledger

Mom came to my office Wednesday morning without calling.

Denise asked whether I wanted her removed.

“No. Give us ten minutes.”

Mom entered carrying a floral handbag and the expression she used when she believed everyone else was behaving irrationally.

“You’re embarrassing your father.”

“He forged my signature.”

“He made a mistake.”

“Repeatedly.”

“He was desperate.”

“That doesn’t make it legal.”

Her lips tightened.

“You’d really report your own father?”

“I haven’t decided anything yet.”

That frightened her.

Good.

Not because I enjoyed frightening my mother.

Because for once she understood that I wasn’t automatically protecting them.

I placed Laura’s notarized statement on the desk.

“Explain this.”

Mom sat down.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she opened her handbag and removed a small notebook.

“I knew this would happen eventually.”

The notebook contained handwritten amounts.

Dates.

Names.

Payments.

Dad had kept his own version of a family ledger.

Next to my name were entries for the original loan, garage use, childcare, vehicle repairs, introductions to customers, Christmas gifts, and even weekends my parents had watched the children.

Dollar values were written beside everything.

Babysitting Rebecca overnight: $250.

Introduced Thomas to Franklin Dental contract: $5,000.

Garage use, first 4 years: $24,000.

Emergency van repair: $1,800.

My father had monetized our relationship.

Then I found entries beside Laura’s name.

Eric’s.

Even Mom’s.

“What is this?”

“Your father keeps track.”

“Of favors?”

“He believes people should remember what they owe.”

I looked at her.

“And you?”

Mom stared at the notebook.

“I used to think it kept things fair.”

“Used to?”

Her eyes filled.

“Then he started counting things nobody agreed were debts.”

There was the pattern none of us wanted to see.

Dad wasn’t stealing randomly.

He genuinely believed every act of generosity purchased future control.

And Mom had spent decades helping him collect.
