Chapter 13

Life settled into a gentle rhythm after that.

Lily finished her degree and got a full-time job at the shelter. She was good at it—so good that they promoted her to program director after just a year.

She and Sarah bought a small house together. A fixer-upper with a big backyard and a porch swing. They spent weekends painting and gardening and making it their own.

I helped them.

It felt good to work with my hands again. To build something. To see them smile as their house slowly became a home.

I stayed busy too.

I did some consulting work for the government, using my old skills to help protect people who needed it. Nothing too dangerous. Nothing that would take me away from Lily for long.

But mostly, I enjoyed the quiet days.

Reading in my armchair. Working in my garden. Having Sunday dinner with Lily and Sarah.

I even started seeing someone.

A woman named Margaret. She was a librarian. Widowed, like me. Kind. Funny. She loved books and gardening and old movies.

We took things slow.

Very slow.

Lily was thrilled.

"Dad, you deserve to be happy," she said when I told her. "You spent so many years taking care of me. It's your turn."

Margaret and I had been dating for about six months when Lily came to me with news.

She was seeing someone.

A man named Daniel. He was a teacher. Kind. Gentle. Patient. He knew everything about her past. And he loved her anyway.

"I'm taking it slow," she told me. "Really slow. I'm not rushing anything. But... I think he could be the one."

I met Daniel a few weeks later.

He came over for dinner.

He was nervous. I could tell.

But he was also genuine. When he looked at Lily, there was nothing but kindness and respect in his eyes. No hidden agendas. No sense of ownership. Just... love.

We talked for hours.

He told me about his job. His family. His hobbies.

And he told me how much Lily meant to him.

"She's the strongest person I've ever met," he said. "What she went through... it would have broken most people. But she turned it into something good. She helps people. She inspires people. I'm just... lucky to be part of her life."

I liked him.

I really liked him.

After he left, Lily looked at me anxiously.

"Well?" she said. "What did you think?"

"I think," I said, smiling, "that he's a good man. And that he loves you very much. And that if he ever hurts you, I have friends in very high places."

Lily laughed.

"Dad!"

"Just saying."

She hugged me.

"Thank you," she said. "For being okay with this. For trusting me."

"Baby," I said. "I'll always trust you. You've earned that. And more."

Life was good.

Really good.

But there was one more thing we had to do.

May you like

One more piece of unfinished business.
