Part 30

I threw the car into a sharp left turn, the tires groaning as we slid around the corner onto the main avenue.
The black SUV didn't slow down, clipping the curb and sending a shower of sparks into the night air.
"They're going to ram us!" Derek shouted, bracing his hand against the dashboard.
"Hold on!" I screamed, weaving through the empty lanes, trying to use the streetlights to my advantage.
The city line was five miles away, and the highway would give us room to run, but we had to get there first.
The SUV lunged forward, its front bumper smashing into our rear quarter panel with a deafening crunch of metal.
The steering wheel ripped violently to the right, threatening to spin the car out of control.
I fought the wheel with all my strength, my muscles burning as I corrected the skid and kept us straight.
Derek rolled down his window, the rushing wind howling into the cabin as he leaned out slightly.
"Derek, what are you doing?!" I cried out, terrified for his safety.
"Giving us some space!" he shouted back over the noise of the wind and the roaring engines.
He raised the revolver, leveling it with practiced steadiness at the SUV's front tires.
Bang! Bang!
The loud cracks of the gunfire echoed through the empty streets, followed by a sharp, explosive pop.

The SUV's front left tire blew apart into shreds of rubber, causing the massive vehicle to veer violently into a light pole.
The impact was catastrophic, sending the SUV spinning across the road in a cloud of smoke and debris.
