Chapter 5 - The Oakridge Sanctuary

The private motorcade rolled through wrought-iron gates that swung open automatically, revealing a winding driveway flanked by towering, centuries-old oak trees. At the end of the drive sat the Oakridge estate—a magnificent, ivy-draped manor that perfectly blended historic charm with modern architectural brilliance. Large arched windows caught the afternoon sunlight, and a wraparound porch overlooked a pristine, manicured garden.

As the SUV came to a smooth halt, Daniel stepped out first, opening my door and offering his hand. I carefully unclipped Emma from her car seat, cradling her securely against my chest as I stepped out onto the gravel driveway. The air here was different—crisp, clean, scented with pine and blooming jasmine, completely devoid of the suffocating tension of my childhood home.

“Well?” Daniel asked, watching me closely, a hint of nervous anticipation flickering in his eyes. “What do you think?”

“It’s breathtaking,” I breathed, genuinely awestruck. It didn't feel like a cold, intimidating corporate mansion; it felt warm, welcoming, and alive.

“It’s your home,” Daniel corrected softly, stepping up beside me and placing a protective arm around my waist.

Inside, the estate was an absolute dream. High vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams created an airy, majestic feel, while plush cashmere furnishings and warm hardwood floors added an undeniable coziness. The nursery, located right next to the master suite, was a masterpiece of soft pastels, featuring a hand-painted ceiling of stars, a custom crib, and shelves stocked with children's classics.

Tessa spun around the spacious kitchen island, marveling at the professional-grade Wolf range and marble countertops. “Oh, my god, Grace. If you ever want a roommate, just say the word. I can easily bunk in the guest wing!”

We all laughed, the sound echoing lightly through the high-ceilinged room. For the first time in months, the heavy knot of anxiety in my chest completely dissolved. Here, surrounded by people who genuinely cared for me, I wasn't a disgrace, a burden, or an insurance policy. I was a mother, a partner, and a woman reclaiming her future.

That evening, after Tessa had headed to her designated guest suite and Emma had fallen fast asleep in her new crib, Daniel and I sat side-by-side on the wraparound porch. A pair of outdoor heaters kept the night chill at bay, and the sky above us was a brilliant blanket of stars, completely uninterrupted by city lights.

Daniel poured two glasses of sparkling cider, handing one to me. He clinked his glass gently against mine. “To new beginnings.”

“To new beginnings,” I echoed, taking a sip. The bubbles danced on my tongue, sweet and refreshing.

Daniel set his glass down on the small wooden table, turning his body slightly to face me. The amber light from the porch sconce cast a warm glow across his sharp features. “Grace, I know everything happened so fast. Between your parents’ betrayal, Emma’s early arrival, and moving into this house, you haven’t had a single moment to breathe. But I want to make one thing crystal clear.”

My heart skipped a beat. I turned to look at him, holding my breath.

“I never stopped loving you,” Daniel said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an intensity that made my pulse race. “From the moment I met you at the university library three years ago, you became my entire world. When I was stuck in Singapore, unable to reach you while you were going through the terror of a high-risk pregnancy alone, I felt like my soul was being ripped apart. I swore to myself that if I made it back, I would spend the rest of my life making sure you never had to shed another tear.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, but it wasn't out of sadness—it was pure, overwhelming relief. I reached out, my hand resting gently against his warm cheek. His skin was rough with stubble, his eyes shining with unshed emotion.

“You’re already doing that, Daniel,” I whispered. “You saved us.”

“We saved each other,” he corrected softly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet box. My breath hitched in my throat. He flipped open the lid, revealing a stunning, custom-designed diamond ring that caught the starlight, sparkling brilliantly.

“Daniel...” I choked out, my hands trembling.

“I know we have time,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I know we need to take things slow, focus on Emma, and let you heal. But I don't want to wait another second to let you know where my heart belongs. Grace Carter, will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life proving how deeply I love you?”

May you like

I didn't hesitate. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as happy tears spilled over. “Yes,” I sobbed softly against his collarbone. “Yes, a million times yes.”

Daniel wrapped his arms tightly around me, pulling me flush against his chest, and pressed a tender, lingering kiss to my lips. The past was gone, washed away by the storm and buried by the truth. All that remained was the bright, beautiful horizon of our future together.
