Chapter 1

My husband lunged at me in front of our eight-year-old daughter—and while he was hitting me, she ran upstairs, grabbed my phone, and called the one person he feared most.

My name is Emily, and I lived outside Chicago with my husband, Ryan, and our daughter, Lily.

That night, Ryan came home furious.

“Where were you this afternoon?”

“At Lily’s school. I told you.”

“You’re lying.”

Before I could answer, he grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, stop.”

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table.

“Daddy, leave Mommy alone.”

Ryan turned toward her.

“Go upstairs.”

She didn’t move.

Then Ryan shoved me against the wall.

I cried out.

Lily screamed, “Stop hurting her!”

Ryan grabbed me again and struck me.

“Ryan!”

I tried to push him away.

That was when Lily suddenly ran upstairs.

Ryan barely noticed.

He was too busy yelling at me.

“You think you can embarrass me?”

A minute later, Lily locked herself inside my bedroom.

She found my phone on the nightstand.

Her hands were shaking when she called my father.

“Grandpa?”

My father, Charles Whitmore, was attending a private dinner in downtown Chicago.

He owned several companies and knew some of the most powerful people in the city.

But Lily only knew him as Grandpa.

“Lily? What’s wrong?”

She started crying.

“Daddy is hitting Mommy.”

There was silence on the other end.

Then my father asked one question.

“Is he still there?”

“Yes.”

“Lock the bedroom door.”

Downstairs, Ryan shoved me to the floor.

Then my phone suddenly rang upstairs.

Ryan looked toward the ceiling.

“Who is she calling?”

I didn’t answer.

He rushed toward the staircase.

But before he reached the first step, headlights flooded our front windows.

One black SUV stopped outside.

Then another.

Then three more.

Ryan slowly turned toward me.

“What did you do?”

I hadn’t done anything.

The front door opened.

My father walked inside with two men behind him.

Ryan went completely still.

“Mr. Whitmore…”

My father looked at me on the floor, then at Ryan.

But instead of shouting, he quietly said five words that drained the color from Ryan’s face.

“I know what you really did.”
