Chapter 1

My Husband Threw a Dinner Plate at My Face—So I Made One Call to My Father

My husband threw a dinner plate straight at my face in front of his entire family—and everyone expected me to stay quiet.

I moved just fast enough for it to hit my shoulder instead.

“Ryan!” I screamed.

The room went silent.

His mother Diane calmly put down her fork.

“Emily, stop embarrassing everyone.”

I stared at her.

“Your son just threw a plate at me.”

Ryan stood over me.

“Because you don’t know when to shut your mouth.”

Our ten-year-old daughter Lily immediately ran toward me.

“Mom, are you okay?”

Ryan snapped, “Go upstairs.”

Lily didn’t move.

I pulled her behind me.

The dinner had started normally at Ryan’s parents’ house outside Dallas.

Then his father asked why I had missed a family vacation.

I told him the truth.

“Ryan emptied our savings account.”

Ryan’s expression changed instantly.

“You promised you wouldn’t discuss that.”

“You took forty thousand dollars without telling me.”

Diane sighed.

“It’s his money too.”

“No,” I said. “Most of it came from my inheritance.”

That was when Ryan grabbed the plate and threw it.

My hands were shaking, but I didn’t cry.

I reached into my purse and took out my phone.

Ryan laughed.

“Who are you calling? The police?”

“No.”

I pressed my father’s number.

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

For six years, he had told his family my father and I no longer spoke.

He had never told them why.

Dad answered on the first ring.

“Emily?”

I looked directly at my husband.

“Dad, I need you to come get Lily and me.”

There was a short silence.

Then my father asked, “Did Ryan touch you?”

Ryan suddenly stepped toward me.

“Hang up.”

I moved back.

“Yes, Dad.”

My father’s voice became frighteningly calm.

“Put me on speaker.”

I did.

Diane rolled her eyes.

Then Dad said Ryan’s full name and mentioned the company Ryan had spent ten years trying to sell.

Ryan went completely still.

His father slowly stood from the table.

“How does your father know about our company?”

I thought Ryan was scared because Dad was coming for me.

Then my father said one sentence that made Ryan grab the back of his chair.

“Emily, don’t leave until I tell you who actually owns that house.”
