CHAPTER 15

In the new year,

I took a big step,

enrolling in an online certification course for graphic design.

I had always loved art,

but my passion had been put away,

labeled as an unnecessary distraction by people who didn't value it.

Now,

while the baby napped,

I opened my laptop,

immersing myself in color theories,

typography,

and digital design layout.

My mind felt alive,

stretching into new territories,

reclaiming its intellectual weight.

It was challenging,

but the challenge was a thrill,

a reminder that my brain was fully functional and sharp.

I received my first assignment grade,

an excellent evaluation from the instructor,

and I felt a rush of pure joy.

I was building a career,

a path toward financial independence that would ensure our long-term security.

One afternoon,

the phone rang,

and the caller ID showed Mr.

Harrison's office.

My heart gave a brief thud,

but I answered with a calm voice,

prepared for whatever news he had.

"The plea agreement is finalized,"

he said,

"Mark has accepted a sentence of probation and mandatory counseling,

along with a heavy financial restitution."

"And Linda?"

I asked,

knowing she would be the harder one to bend.

"She accepted a similar plea,"

he replied,

"criminal negligence on her record,

community service,

and a permanent restraining order that carries jail time if violated."

It was over,

the legal system had spoken,

marking them as wrongdoers in the eyes of the law.

They had avoided jail,

but they had lost their reputation,

their pride,

and their power over me.

"The restitution funds will be deposited into a trust for your daughter,"

Mr.

Harrison explained,

"it will secure her education."

I closed my eyes,

feeling a wave of gratitude for this final act of justice.

Their money,

which they had used as a tool of control,

would now serve the future of the child they had neglected.

"Thank you,

Mr.

Harrison,"

I said,

"for everything."

"You did the hard work,"

May you like

he said gently,

"I just handled the paperwork."
