Part 3: The Phone Call That Shattered the Illusion
Emily didn't waste another second.
She grabbed Zoey's diaper bag, her purse, and the car keys hanging beside the front door.
"We're going to the hospital."
Carol folded her arms.
"You are overreacting."
Emily didn't even look at her.
Mrs. Henderson stepped forward.
"I'll drive."
Emily blinked.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
The elderly woman smiled gently.
"But you shouldn't be driving while you're shaking."
Only then did Emily realize her hands were trembling so badly that she could barely hold the keys.
She nodded gratefully.
"Thank you."
Dr. Melissa carefully handed Emily a small packet of ice wrapped in a towel.
"Keep this on her cheek."
"I'll call ahead so they'll be expecting you."
Emily whispered,
"Thank you."
Before leaving, she looked at Jackson.
The boy stood alone near the dining table.
Carol hadn't spoken to him since he told the truth.
He looked frightened.
Guilty.
As if he believed everything happening was somehow his fault.
Emily walked over and gently hugged him with one arm.
"You were brave."
Jackson immediately burst into tears.
"I didn't want Grandma to hit her."
His voice cracked.
"I tried to stop her."
Emily pulled back just enough to look into his eyes.
"You did nothing wrong."
"I should have grabbed Zoey."
"No."
"I should've shouted louder."
Emily gently wiped away his tears.
"You protected her by telling the truth."
Jackson whispered something so quietly only Emily heard it.
"She used to hit Uncle Thomas too."
Emily froze.
"What?"
The boy immediately looked terrified.
Carol shouted from the living room.
"Jackson!"
He jumped.
"I..."
"I didn't mean..."
Emily knelt in front of him.
"Who told you that?"
Jackson shook his head rapidly.
"No one."
"Jackson."
"I can't."
His entire body trembled.
"Grandma said..."
"...family secrets stay inside the family."
Emily felt a chill crawl down her spine.
Twenty minutes later...
The emergency department at Asheville Regional Medical Center was unusually quiet for a Sunday afternoon.
A pediatric nurse gently took Zoey from Emily's arms.
"We'll take good care of her."
Emily nodded, though every instinct screamed not to let go.
Dr. Melissa had already sent photographs of the injuries ahead.
Within minutes, a pediatric emergency physician entered the examination room.
Dr. Nathan Collins introduced himself with a calm smile.
"I'm going to examine Zoey."
Emily stood beside the bed, holding her daughter's tiny hand.
Zoey looked exhausted.
Her eyes kept drifting shut.
Every time someone touched her face, she whimpered softly.
Dr. Collins examined the swelling carefully.
Then he looked at Emily.
"Can you tell me exactly what happened?"
Emily repeated everything.
Every detail.
The sausage.
The slap.
The second slap.
Jackson's confession.
The skipped lunch.
The doctor's expression grew more serious with every sentence.
When he finished examining Zoey, he quietly closed the curtain around the bed.
Then he sat beside Emily.
"I'm glad you brought her in."
Emily's heart pounded.
"Why?"
"The bleeding appears to have come from trauma to the nose."
He pointed gently toward the bruise.
"The impact was considerable."
Emily swallowed hard.
"Will she be okay?"
"I believe so."
"But..."
She held her breath.
"...we'll need X-rays to rule out a fracture."
Emily felt dizzy.
A fracture?
Because of a sausage?
At that moment, another woman entered the room carrying a clipboard.
She smiled kindly.
"Hello."
"I'm Rebecca."
"I'm the hospital social worker."
Emily frowned.
"Social worker?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Whenever a young child arrives with injuries caused by another caregiver..."
"...hospital policy requires us to evaluate the situation."
Emily understood immediately.
She wasn't offended.
She was relieved.
Someone was finally taking this seriously.
Rebecca sat beside her.
"Does the person who struck Zoey live with you?"
Emily hesitated.
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"Almost three years."
"Has she ever hurt Zoey before?"
Emily opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Memory after memory flooded back.
Carol grabbing Zoey's wrist too hard because she spilled cereal.
Calling her "greedy."
Refusing dessert while Jackson received two servings.
Pinching her arm when Emily wasn't looking.
At the time...
Each incident had seemed small.
An isolated moment.
Now...
They formed a pattern.
Emily whispered,
"I think..."
"...I've ignored things I shouldn't have."
Rebecca gently nodded.
"That happens more often than people realize."
Emily's phone vibrated.
Thomas Calling.
She stared at the screen.
Her husband was finally calling from Reno.
She answered immediately.
"Thomas."
His cheerful voice filled the room.
"Hey, sweetheart."
"I just landed."
"How's everyone?"
Emily couldn't speak.
"Em?"
"What happened?"
She looked at Zoey lying on the hospital bed.
Then answered quietly.
"Your mother hit our daughter."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Finally...
Thomas laughed once.
Not because he thought it was funny.
Because he didn't believe he'd heard correctly.
"What?"
"Carol slapped Zoey."
"No."
"Twice."
Another long silence.
Then he asked the question Emily had dreaded.
"What did Zoey do?"
Emily slowly closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not—
Is she okay?
Not—
Where are you?
Not—
I'm coming home.
His first instinct...
Was to ask what their two-year-old had done.
Emily felt something inside her crack.
"She accepted half a sausage from Jackson."
Thomas sighed.
"I knew Mom would lose her temper eventually."
Emily couldn't believe it.
"You knew?"
"I told you she gets strict around food."
"Strict?"
Emily's voice rose.
"Thomas..."
"...our daughter is in the emergency room."
Silence.
Then his voice became cautious.
"Is it really that serious?"
Emily looked toward Dr. Collins.
The physician met her eyes sadly.
She answered with tears running down her face.
"They're checking to see if her nose is broken."
Nothing came from the other end of the line.
Not a single word.
Then...
Almost in a whisper...
Thomas asked,
"Can I speak to Mom?"
Emily stared at the phone in disbelief.
Her husband...
The father of the little girl lying on the hospital bed...
Wanted to speak to the woman who had hit her...
Before speaking to his daughter.
Rebecca quietly lowered her clipboard.
Even she looked shocked.
Emily slowly ended the call.
Without another word.
For the first time in seven years of marriage...

She realized the hardest battle ahead might not be against her mother-in-law.
It might be against the man she had trusted to protect their child.
