Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped me across the face in front of my husband’s entire family—so I slapped her back, and the secret she screamed afterward changed my marriage forever.

It happened during Sunday dinner at my mother-in-law Diane’s house outside Chicago.

I had barely sat down when she started criticizing me.

“You’ve turned Michael into someone I don’t recognize.”

I kept my voice calm.

“Diane, I came here to have dinner, not fight.”

She laughed.

“You don’t get to tell me what happens in my house.”

My husband Michael stared at his plate.

Nobody said a word.

Then Diane looked at my eight-year-old daughter, Emma.

“At least Michael’s first wife knew how to raise a child.”

My chair scraped against the floor as I stood.

“Do not bring my daughter into this.”

Diane walked straight toward me.

“What are you going to do about it?”

“Mom, stop,” Michael finally whispered.

She ignored him.

Then, without warning, Diane slapped me across the face.

The entire table froze.

My cheek burned, but what hurt more was seeing Michael remain seated.

Diane smiled.

“That’s what happens when you disrespect me.”

I looked at Michael.

“Are you seriously going to let her do this?”

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Diane raised her hand again.

This time, I caught her wrist.

“No.”

She tried to slap me with her other hand.

I reacted before I could think.

I slapped her back.

Diane stumbled against the table, staring at me in disbelief.

Then she screamed, “You ungrateful little gold digger!”

Michael jumped between us.

But Diane wasn’t finished.

She pointed at me and shouted, “Tell her, Michael!”

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?”

Michael suddenly went pale.

Diane laughed through her anger.

“You think this house is the only thing he’s been hiding?”

Michael grabbed his mother’s arm.

“Mom, shut up.”

That made me stop breathing.

Diane ripped herself away from him.

Then she looked directly at me and said, “Ask your husband where he really goes every Thursday night.”

Michael’s phone began ringing on the table.

I looked down at the screen.

The caller’s name was one I knew very well.

It was my sister’s.
