Chapter 5 - BELLA’S VERSION OF THE PARTY
Bella had spent four years learning how to smile after crying.
Sabrina called it resetting.
If Bella complained during filming, she had to face the camera afterward and say the scene was planned.
If she refused, Sabrina threatened to cancel dance classes, take away her phone, or tell sponsors Bella was ungrateful.
Connor escaped some of the pressure because his role was to be noisy and impulsive.
Bella’s role was perfection.
The birthday party was supposed to confirm that image.
The sponsor wanted Bella to appear confident enough to “transform” her quieter cousin.
When Grace arrived looking beautiful, several guests turned toward her.
Sabrina interpreted ordinary compliments as a threat to the campaign.
Bella did not ask for the haircut.
Her mother told her:
“If you don’t act jealous, everyone will know you aren’t strong enough to lead your own brand.”
The raw video captured Bella repeating “do the front next” after Sabrina squeezed her wrist.
The pink drive contained recordings made after public videos ended.
Children apologizing for “ruining takes.”
Children repeating consent lines.
Bella vomiting after a food challenge.
Connor crying while Thomas told him boys who wanted payment did not deserve family.
Grace saying she wanted to go home during a sleepover while Evelyn locked the front door and told her Claire was too busy at the hospital to collect her.
The recordings were not equally severe.
Some showed emotional coercion.
Others showed ordinary children becoming distressed during badly managed content.
Together, they demonstrated a system in which a camera made every boundary negotiable.
Evelyn had taken the drive.
Police found the pink case in her garage, but the storage device was absent.
She claimed Bella was confused.
Thomas said no such drive existed.
Connor’s school cloud account proved otherwise.
Months earlier, he had copied several files to a class media project because he feared Sabrina would delete them.
His teacher noticed unusually large uploads and restricted access without opening them.
With Michael’s consent and a warrant, investigators preserved the folder.
The post-filming videos survived.
One file began the night before Bella’s birthday.
Thomas sat at Sabrina’s kitchen island with spreadsheets.
“The trust audit is ten months away,” he said. “The Little Crown bonus covers the hole if you hit the view threshold.”
Sabrina asked what happened if Grace refused filming.
Evelyn answered:
“Claire works weekends. We control the child while she is here.”
Bella’s voice came from the hallway.
“Mom?”
The adults stopped speaking.
Sabrina walked toward her.
The tablet remained recording.
Bella asked why scissors were on the counter.
Sabrina replied:
“Because tomorrow you are going to learn whether you want this family to survive.”
Bella told the interviewer she had believed losing the company would make them homeless.
Sabrina had shown her overdue notices and said Grace’s mother could save everyone but refused out of jealousy.
A child was made responsible for a company’s survival.
That evening, child welfare placed Bella and Connor temporarily with Michael.
Sabrina received professionally supervised contact pending court review.
The media company suspended operations.
Its twelve employees were told their paychecks might stop.
I instructed our lawyers not to seize company equipment or accounts beyond lawful freezes.
The workers had not cut Grace’s hair.
Several had already gone weeks without full wages.
A receiver appointed in the civil case preserved payroll from available sponsor reserves while the investigation continued.
Sabrina accused me online of destroying her children’s future.
The post included a photograph of my slap.
She wrote:
My sister attacked me in front of children because she cannot tolerate another woman’s success.
The video did not show Grace in the frame.
It made me look exactly like the person Sabrina needed me to become.
Then my parents filed an emergency guardianship petition seeking temporary custody of Grace.
They alleged I was violent, unstable, chronically absent, and using my daughter to retaliate against the family.
The petition had been drafted nine days before the birthday.
