Chapter 2 - The Morning After and the Ex-Wife’s Interference

The morning sun washed over the courtyard of the boutique hotel downtown, casting warm golden light across the table where Rachel, Olivia, and Ethan were eating a quiet breakfast. Ethan was surprisingly cheerful, nibbling on a blueberry muffin while sketching a new airplane design on a hotel notepad. The terrible weight that had hovered over him since the night before seemed to have lifted, simply because his mother had drawn a hard boundary.
Rachel’s phone, however, was a vibrating nightmare on the edge of the table.
Calls from Daniel had flooded in since 6:00 AM. She had silenced them all, choosing instead to check her email portal. That was when she noticed a new message flagged with high priority.
It wasn't from Daniel. It was from Melissa Miller, her stepchildren’s biological mother.
Rachel opened the message out of morbid curiosity. The text was scathing, written in all caps with a barrage of exclamation points:
“WHAT KIND OF MONSTER ARE YOU?! Daniel called me in a panic this morning because my babies woke up with no phones, no internet, and no way to contact their friends or school! You are a pathetic, insecure control freak taking out your marital problems on innocent teenagers. Jason is crying because he missed his esports qualifier, and Alyssa is refusing to go to school because she's humiliated. If you think you can abuse my children just because you’re jealous of our bond, you’ve got another thing coming. I’m driving over there right now to sort this out once and for all!”
Rachel let out a bitter, humorless laugh. Insecure control freak. For years, Melissa had operated a shadow campaign of psychological warfare from her luxurious home in Scottsdale, whispering into Jason and Alyssa’s ears that Rachel was just a temporary placeholder—the “stepmonster” whose money was good, but whose authority was zero. And Daniel, paralyzed by guilt over his past divorce, had allowed it all to happen.
Rachel calmly typed a reply to Melissa:
“Melissa, if you care so much about your ‘babies,’ feel free to pay for their phone plans, their clothes, their orthodontist bills, and their college funds from now on. My financial support for your children expired last night at midnight. Have a wonderful morning.”
She hit send, blocked Melissa’s number without a second thought, and turned her attention back to her kids.
“Mom, are we going back home today?” Olivia asked softly, playing with her spoon.
Rachel reached across the table, taking her daughter’s hand. “We’re going back when it’s time, sweetheart. But things are going to be very different. No one in our house will ever disrespect you, and no one will ever make you feel small. I promise.”
Back at the suburban house in Phoenix, the morning was nothing short of apocalyptic. Jason was pacing the living room floor, slamming his fists against the walls because his gaming console was a glorified paperweight without internet access and his phone had no data. Alyssa was sitting on the sofa wrapped in a blanket, refusing to get dressed for school, sobbing dramatically into her uncharged iPhone.
Daniel sat at the kitchen island, his head buried in his hands, staring at a stack of bills he suddenly realized he couldn't afford on his own salary alone. For years, Rachel’s successful marketing business had covered the luxury expenses, the extracurricular fees, and the household extras. Without her, Daniel’s modest income barely covered the mortgage and utilities.
Before Daniel could even process his financial panic, a loud, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door.

Daniel pulled open the door to find Melissa Miller standing on the porch, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her forehead, her face contorted in absolute rage. She didn't wait to be invited in; she shoved past him and marched right into the living room.
“Where is she, Daniel?!” Melissa demanded, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Where is that miserable cow who thinks she can starve my children of basic necessities?”
