CHAPTER 7 — THE LEDGER THAT COULD DESTROY AN EMPIRE

CHAPTER 7 — THE LEDGER THAT COULD DESTROY AN EMPIRE
The old harbor was silent before dawn.
Fog drifted over rusting shipping containers, swallowing the broken cranes that had once unloaded cargo from every corner of the world. It was the perfect place for secrets.
Josiah arrived with only three trusted men.
Against every protest, Willow insisted on coming.
"I'm not leaving Mia."
Josiah looked at her.
"You've already risked your life."
"I'm still breathing."
"You don't understand what we're walking into."
Willow met his eyes without fear.
"I understand exactly one thing."
"If Mia loses another person she trusts..."
"...she may never recover."
For the first time in years, Josiah didn't argue.
He simply nodded.
The blue key fit a rusted steel door hidden beneath Warehouse 17.
Behind it lay a narrow staircase leading deep underground.
At the bottom waited an old bank vault.
Olivia had chosen well.
No one would ever think to search beneath an abandoned dock.
Josiah inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside sat a single fireproof case.
Nothing more.
He opened it carefully.
Instead of gold...
there was a thick leather-bound ledger.
Several USB drives.
A sealed envelope.
The envelope bore Olivia's handwriting.
For Josiah. Open only if I cannot come home.
His hands shook.
Willow quietly took Mia outside the vault, giving father and daughter a few moments apart.
Josiah unfolded the letter.
"My love,"
"If you're reading this, then I was right."
"Someone inside the family wanted me dead."
"I discovered that Gabriel never died."
"He has spent years laundering money through our organization while arranging the murders of judges, journalists, police officers, and anyone who refused to cooperate."
"I gathered proof because I believed you deserved the truth."
"You were never the monster people feared."
"You were simply born into a family that taught you survival instead of love."
"Please don't let Mia inherit our darkness."
"If you love us..."
"Walk away."
"Choose your daughter over revenge."
"That will be the only victory Gabriel can never steal."
Love always,
Olivia
Josiah lowered the letter.
For years he had dreamed of revenge.
Now his wife was asking for something far more difficult.
Forgiveness.

Suddenly...
Gunfire erupted above.
Owen's voice thundered through loudspeakers.
"Thank you for opening the vault."
"We couldn't have done it without you."
Concrete exploded.
The underground chamber shook.
Gabriel Mercer slowly descended the staircase surrounded by dozens of armed men.
He looked almost elegant.
Silver hair.
Tailored suit.
A grandfather's smile.
A devil's eyes.
"So good to finally meet you again..."
"...nephew."
Gabriel glanced toward Mia.
"There she is."
"The last Mercer."
Mia instinctively hid behind Willow.
Gabriel smiled warmly.
"Don't be afraid."
"I knew your mother."
"I know."
Mia answered quietly.
"You killed her."
The smile disappeared.
Children sometimes saw truth before adults dared to admit it.
Gabriel raised one hand.
His men aimed their rifles.
"Give me the ledger."
Josiah closed the fireproof case.
"No."
"You're choosing death?"
"I'm choosing my daughter."
Gabriel laughed.
"Too late."
He snapped his fingers.
May you like
Every weapon fired.
The underground vault exploded into chaos.
