Chapter 8 - MY FATHER’S ATTORNEYRachel stepped backward.

“Claire.”

I stared at her.

“You knew about this storage unit?”

“No.”

Police immediately separated us.

Rachel surrendered her phone.

Her laptop.

Everything.

She looked more hurt than frightened.

That made me doubt the accusation.

Dad’s note continued.

Rachel had handled my estate.

But years earlier, she had also worked at Harold Finch’s law firm.

I never knew.

Rachel admitted it.

“I was an associate.”

“For how long?”

“Four years.”

“Why hide that?”

“I didn’t hide it.”

“You never mentioned it.”

“It wasn’t relevant.”

My laugh sounded hollow.

“Apparently everything is relevant now.”

Police examined her old emails.

Then found something.

Rachel had contacted Allison six months before Dad died.

Rachel claimed Dad instructed her to.

Allison confirmed it.

Then one email changed everything.

From Rachel to Harold:

Thomas is close. If he reaches Claire first, we lose the structure.

I stared.

“What structure?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“The independent trust.”

“What?”

She explained.

Dad planned to convert my Bennett note and his remaining estate into a protected trust.

Rachel and Allison were helping.

The wording looked incriminating because they were hiding the plan from Harold.

“Why would Dad warn me about you?”

Rachel looked genuinely confused.

Then police examined the handwriting.

The note was not Dad’s.

It was a nearly perfect imitation.

Harold had forged it.

Again.

He anticipated we would find the storage unit.

He wanted me to turn on the one lawyer protecting me.

The safe itself had been accessed three days earlier.

Someone had planted the letter.

Harold was still close.

Watching.

Then investigators recovered deleted video from the storage facility.

A man entered wearing a cap.

Harold.

Two nights after my wedding.

He had not fled.

He had been building traps.

The video showed him leaving with a second person.

A woman.

Margaret.

My stomach dropped.

Again.

Margaret claimed she had been forced.

Harold had threatened Daniel.

But the footage showed no coercion.

She looked calm.

She carried a briefcase.

Police arrested her again.

This time for obstruction.

Daniel was devastated.

“I thought she was helping us.”

I looked at him.

“That makes two of us.”

Margaret finally confessed that Harold had promised her immunity.

If she helped him retrieve certain records, he would ensure Daniel avoided prison.

Mother saving son.

Again.

By committing another crime.

She handed Harold a list of my father’s safe-deposit locations.

One remained unopened.

Bank vault 411.

Police reached it first.

Inside was my father’s final evidence package.

The original convertible note.

No spousal transfer clause.

No competency loophole.

No Daniel.

No Allison.

No Harold.

Just me.

My father had already amended it.

The fraud was pointless.

Daniel’s family had spent months trying to steal a right that had already been legally protected.

Then we found another document.

A buyout offer.

Signed by an unknown company:

GRAYSON CAPITAL.

Offer:

$280 million for my forty-one percent upon conversion.

Rachel frowned.

“Who is Grayson?”

Nobody knew.

The company was registered through offshore entities.

Police traced the beneficial owner.

Allison Reed.

I stared at her.

She had spent the entire investigation presenting herself as another victim.

And secretly, she had prepared to buy my shares the moment Bennett Hospitality collapsed.

When confronted, Allison did not deny it.

May you like

She simply said:

“I never planned to give you control.”
