Part 5

Donatella dropped her phone onto the porch, the screen cracking against the stone, but she didn't seem to notice. The high-society matriarch who had spent decades cultivating an image of unassailable perfection was gone. In her place stood a desperate, cornered woman whose entire identity was tied to a lifestyle she could no longer afford. She lunged forward, pounding her fists against the heavy mahogany door until her knuckles turned bruised and raw.
"You calculated little snake!" Donatella screamed, her voice cracking under the strain of her hysteria. "We took you in! We gave you a family after your grandfather died! You would be nothing without the Callahan name backing your firm! We are your family, Samantha! You can't do this to your own family! Think of the legacy we built!"
"Legacy?" Samantha’s voice returned through the speaker, colder and sharper than before. "Let’s talk about that legacy, Donatella. Your legacy is a mountain of debt hidden behind a collection of leased luxury vehicles and a mortgaged-to-the-hilt penthouse. And as for taking me in—you didn't welcome me into your family. You targeted me the moment you realized my grandfather’s estate held the primary deeds to the commercial blocks your boutique relies on. You pushed Oliver to pursue me because you needed a permanent lifeline to my trust fund."
Oliver stood frozen, the papers still clutched in his hand, his eyes staring blankly at the solid wood door. He remembered the private conversations with his mother in the study, the hushed strategy sessions where they discussed how to gradually transfer Samantha’s assets into their corporate accounts without triggering her suspicion. They had truly believed she was naive, a simple girl who was easily swayed by expensive dinners and superficial affection. They had never imagined that behind her gentle demeanor lay a brilliant, analytical mind that was quietly documenting every single infraction.

"Samantha, please let me in," Oliver pleaded, his voice cracking as he approached the intercom speaker. "We can fix this. I'll sign whatever you want. I'll transfer my remaining shares in the consultancy to you. Just don't let this go to the authorities. If the federal regulators get involved, it’s over for all of us. The scandal alone will destroy everything."
"It’s already over, Oliver," Samantha replied calmly. "You speak of the authorities as if they haven't been notified yet. My legal team didn't just send those files to your board of directors. They delivered copies to the financial crimes division of the state attorney's office at eight o'clock this morning. I gave them a two-hour head start before I changed the locks on this house. If I were you, I would look down the road right about now."
