SERIES : When Elena Stood / Chapter 4 / 5

Chapter 4 - The Last Lie

Lucía asked to speak somewhere Mateo could not hear.

Mateo refused.

"Every time adults decide I shouldn't hear something, somebody lies to me."

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

"Then you stay."

They sat in a police interview room after the fire department secured the storage site. Detective Mara placed Alejandro's message on the table between them.

"Start talking," she told Lucía.

Lucía folded her hands.

"The night Carmen died, she called me from her car."

Mateo stared at her.

"You said you didn't know anything."

"I said I didn't know the brake line had been cut. That was true. But I knew she was driving to meet Alejandro."

Elena leaned forward. "Why?"

"Because I gave him the location."

Mateo's chair scraped backward.

"You betrayed her."

Lucía flinched. "Yes."

"Why?"

"Alejandro had my daughter."

Mara's eyes sharpened. "Explain."

"He sent me a photograph of Sofía in the back seat of his car. She was fifteen. He said she was safe, but she would stay safe only if I told him where Carmen was taking the evidence."

Elena whispered, "So you told him."

"I did. Then I called Carmen immediately and begged her not to meet him."

"Did she answer?"

"Yes. She was furious with me. She said she was already on the mountain road and would turn around."

Mateo's voice shook. "Then what happened?"

Lucía wiped her face.

"She called again eight minutes later. She said her brakes weren't responding. I told her to downshift, use the hand brake slowly, aim for the barrier if she had to. Then the call cut off."

Mateo looked as if he could not breathe.

Elena moved beside him.

"Mateo."

He pushed her hand away.

"Did my mom know you told him?"

"Yes."

"Was she scared?"

"Yes."

"Was she angry?"

"Yes."

"Did she hate you?"

Lucía shook her head.

"Her last complete sentence to me was, 'Get your daughter and then tell Elena everything.'"

Mateo stared at the table.

Mara asked, "Why didn't you?"

"Because Sofía was returned to my house before midnight, and Alejandro was waiting in my kitchen. He said the police would find Carmen's blood alcohol level elevated."

"Was she drinking?" Elena asked.

"No."

"Then how?"

"A blood sample was mishandled at the private clinic that processed the postmortem toxicology. I later found a payment from one of Alejandro's companies to that clinic."

Mara leaned back. "That is the Madrid clinic from Carmen's ledger?"

"Yes."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Everything comes back to the same place."

Mara's phone rang. She listened, then looked at Elena.

"Fire investigators recovered part of the vehicle. The brake assembly is damaged, but the line near the master cylinder was shielded enough to survive. They're sending it to the lab."

"And Alejandro?"

"His card was used, but security footage doesn't clearly show his face. His attorney says the card was stolen yesterday."

Mateo laughed bitterly. "Of course it was."

Mara continued, "We also have a warrant for his financial records. That part may move faster than the homicide case."

Elena sat upright.

"I want him to talk."

"He won't."

"He will if he thinks he can still control the story."

Mara watched her carefully. "What are you proposing?"

Elena looked at Lucía.

"He believes Lucía can still be frightened."

Lucía understood first.

"You want me to call him."

"I want you to tell him I'm willing to sign a private settlement."

Mara shook her head. "No unsupervised contact."

"Supervise it. Record it legally. Put officers in the next room."

"He may send an attorney."

"Then we make it personal."

Mateo looked at her. "How?"

Elena's voice hardened.

"We tell him I found the original red ledger."

Lucía stared. "But we didn't."

"He doesn't know that."

Mara was silent for several seconds.

"A controlled conversation may be possible. But you do exactly what I say."

They arranged the meeting for the next afternoon in Elena's home.

Lucía called Alejandro from the police station.

"She wants to end this," Lucía said.

His voice came thinly through the speaker. "End what?"

"The scandal. She found the ledger."

Silence.

"That's impossible."

Elena and Mara exchanged a glance.

Lucía continued, "She wants you to sign over control of the foundation and leave the country. In return, she won't give the ledger to the prosecutor."

"Elena is there with you."

"No."

"You're lying."

Lucía forced herself to breathe evenly.

"Then don't come."

Alejandro hung up.

He arrived at Elena's house at 3:17 p.m. the next day without an attorney.

He wore the same navy suit he had worn to Carmen's funeral.

Elena noticed immediately.

"You kept that suit."

Alejandro closed the library door. "You kept many things. Including grudges you borrowed from the dead."

Elena sat in her wheelchair beside the desk. A thin folder rested in front of her.

Two microphones were hidden in the room. Mara and three officers listened from the kitchen.

Lucía stood near the window.

Alejandro looked at the folder.

"Where is it?"

"Sit down."

"Where is the ledger?"

"You first. Why did you delete my nerve study?"

"I didn't."

"Why did you burn the car?"

"I didn't."

"Why did you pay the Madrid clinic?"

"For treatment."

Elena smiled faintly. "You always answer the question next to the one I ask."

Alejandro leaned toward her.

"You have no idea what Carmen did to this family."

"Then tell me."

"She turned everyone against me. She filled Lucía's head with theories. She convinced you to leave me when you were vulnerable."

"I decided to leave you before the crash."

His expression flickered.

Elena saw it.

"You knew."

"You were my wife. Of course I knew."

"How? I told only Carmen."

"Carmen told everyone everything."

Lucía said, "No, she didn't."

Alejandro rounded on her. "You should be grateful I protected you."

"You threatened my daughter."

"I kept her away from a dangerous situation."

"You put a fifteen-year-old in your car and used her to blackmail me."

"Words, Lucía. Choose them carefully."

Elena touched the folder.

"Carmen chose hers carefully too. She wrote down dates. Payments. Names."

Alejandro stared at the folder again.

"Show me."

"Tell me why you kept my wrecked car."

He paused.

"Insurance dispute."

"There wasn't one."

"Sentiment."

"You burned it yesterday."

"I told you, my access card was stolen."

Elena opened the folder just enough for him to see a photocopied ledger page from Carmen's archive.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"So you recognize it."

"It's Carmen's handwriting."

"You said the ledger never existed."

He realized the mistake.

Lucía whispered, "There it is."

Alejandro stood.

"This meeting is over."

Elena did not move.

"Did you cut Carmen's brake line?"

"No."

"Did you cut mine?"

He froze.

Elena watched him.

"I never said the police found evidence mine was cut."

His eyes sharpened.

"You implied it."

"No. I asked a question."

For the first time, anger broke through his careful calm.

"You were going to destroy everything over an audit. You had no idea what the company needed. You had no idea how many people depended on me keeping control."

Elena's voice stayed quiet.

"So you frightened me."

"I tried to stop you from driving that night."

"By damaging my brakes?"

"I loosened a line. It was supposed to leak slowly. You were supposed to feel the pedal go soft before you reached the highway."

Lucía covered her mouth.

Alejandro realized what he had said.

Elena's eyes filled, but she did not look away.

"And after I survived?"

He backed toward the door.

"You were injured."

"And recovering."

"You would have left me and accused me without proof."

"So you kept me weak."

"I kept you safe."

Elena's voice rose for the first time.

"You kept me in a chair."

The library door opened.

Mara entered with two officers.

"Alejandro Rivas, don't move."

He looked at Elena with naked hatred.

"You set me up."

Elena shook her head.

"No. Carmen did. I just finally listened."

As officers handcuffed him, Mateo appeared at the end of the hall despite Rosa's attempt to keep him upstairs.

Alejandro saw him.

"Your mother caused all of this."

Mateo's face went white.

Elena stood.

Not smoothly. Not strongly. But she stood.

She placed herself between Mateo and Alejandro.

"No," she said. "His mother tried to stop it."

Mara led Alejandro away.

Then her phone rang.

She answered, listened, and looked back at Elena.

"The lab just called about the car."

Elena gripped the desk for balance.

"Mine?"

"Yes. Tool marks on the brake fitting. Consistent with deliberate loosening."

Mateo whispered, "So it's over?"

Mara hesitated.

"The crash case is strong now. The fraud case is strong. But Carmen's death is still missing one final piece."

Lucía looked toward the recorder on the desk.

"Maybe not."

Everyone turned to her.

"Carmen's first recording had a click near the end," she said. "I thought it was the stop button. It might have been a file marker. Some old recorders store multiple tracks."

Mateo stared at the device.

"There's another recording?"

May you like

Lucía picked it up carefully.

"I think Carmen left one more message."
