Chapter 9 - the signature Ms. Kincaid remembered
Nurse Dana took the forged referral personally.
She knew exactly how her signature looked.
The BrightPath form copied it well.
Too well.
Detective Cole asked where someone could have obtained a sample.
School records contained dozens of signed health forms.
Who had access?
Administrators.
Office staff.
Parents receiving copies of their own children’s records.
And one outside contractor.
A company that digitized old school health documents the previous summer.
Name:
Keystone Student Records.
Its subcontractor:
Harper Medical Logistics.
Nora stared.
“Harper?”
Dean Harper.
Caleb’s uncle.
Dean’s company handled document scanning for several school districts.
He had access to historical nurse signatures.
Not medical decisions.
But enough to copy Dana’s name.
Detective Cole confronted him.
Dean refused to answer.
The school district immediately suspended the vendor relationship and began reviewing access logs.
Ms. Kincaid remembered another odd event.
Three months earlier, a man had visited the school claiming he was updating emergency-contact records for children enrolled in a county wellness initiative.
She had directed him to the office.
“Who?”
She searched her memory.
Gray-haired.
Friendly.
A hospital badge.
Martin Vale.
He had been physically inside the school.
The visitor log confirmed it.
Purpose entered:
COMMUNITY HEALTH PARTNERSHIP.
No such approved partnership existed.
Vale had collected public-facing materials.
Possibly seen forms.
Possibly identified candidates.
Why Lila?
The H-07 file gave part of the answer.
FAMILY HISTORY: first-degree paternal aunt autoimmune death.
Caleb had voluntarily supplied Leah’s history.
Lila was selected because of family risk.
But a second line had been added later:
MATERNAL HISTORY FLAG — PRIOR SAMPLE AVAILABLE.
Nora frowned.
“What prior sample?”
She had never given BrightPath anything.
Investigators searched Vale’s hospital files.
An archived laboratory record appeared.
Nora Harper.
Age seven.
Sample retained from a pediatric study conducted twenty-nine years earlier.
Nora stared at the date.
“I was in a study?”
Her mother was dead.
Her father lived in Florida but suffered from memory loss.
She remembered only routine childhood hospital visits.
The study name:
Pennsylvania Childhood Immunity Project.
Principal investigator:
Dr. Samuel Vale.
Martin Vale’s father.
Nora felt cold.
“His father studied me?”
Apparently.
Lila had not been selected only because of Caleb’s family history.
She was the child of someone whose biological sample already existed in an older research archive.
The BrightPath portal noted:
SECOND-GENERATION COMPARABILITY HIGH.
Dr. Morris stared.
“That changes the research motive.”
Nora’s voice shook.
“What does it mean?”
“They may have wanted to compare a child with a parent who had been studied decades earlier.”
“Without telling me?”
“Yes.”
That made the program more deliberate.
More historical.
Martin Vale had access to his father’s archived research.
He found Nora’s old record.
Then learned her daughter had a paternal family history of immune disease.
Lila became uniquely interesting to him.
Caleb’s fear made recruitment easier.
Nora’s objection made her inconvenient.
The custody case removed her.
The forged school referral completed the appearance of legitimacy.
Ms. Kincaid felt sick.
A seven-year-old child had been reduced to a perfect combination of data points.
Then Detective Cole found a note in Martin Vale’s private file.
H-07 ideal due dual-lineage history.
Father compliant.
Mother resistant.
Custody intervention successful.
Nora stared at the phrase.
“Custody intervention.”
There it was.
Not an unfortunate consequence.
Part of the program’s strategy.
Detective Cole immediately sent the file to prosecutors handling Nora’s custody review.
Caleb’s emergency order began unraveling.
But another line appeared below:
MATERNAL SOURCE N.H. NOT INFORMED OF ORIGINAL 1997 EVENT.
Nora read it twice.
“Original event?”
Dr. Morris frowned.
The old study file from Nora’s childhood contained a sealed incident report.
Access restricted.
Signed by:
Samuel Vale.
And one other physician.
Dr. Aaron Voss.
Nora stared.
Voss had been involved in her childhood research too.
