Chapter 7 - THE BRIDE’S LOCKER

Penelope called her sister.

Madison did not answer.

She called Nathan.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

The wedding was less than fourteen hours away, and the bride and groom had disappeared.

Carlo laughed through the factory speakers.

“You should pay closer attention to your family, Miss Hayes.”

Matteo stepped into the open yard.

“Release Adrian.”

“Bring me the key.”

“You cannot leave this property.”

“Neither can you.”

Red dots appeared across Matteo’s chest.

Penelope moved toward him.

Luca caught her arm.

“Do not.”

“He’ll be shot.”

“Carlo needs him alive.”

“How do you know?”

“Because killing Matteo doesn’t open the freight vault.”

Sofia stared up at her captive son.

“Carlo, you have Leo. Let Adrian go.”

“You had twenty years to earn the right to make requests.”

Sofia flinched.

Carlo ordered one of his men to take Leo.

Penelope stepped in front of the child.

“No.”

The guard pointed a gun at her.

Matteo’s voice crossed the yard.

“If anyone touches her, the key is destroyed.”

Carlo looked interested.

“You don’t have it.”

“Neither do you.”

Matteo held up his phone.

“Luca photographed both sides. The original is irrelevant.”

That was a lie.

Penelope had seen the key. Its teeth were ordinary, but the shaft contained tiny engraved markings impossible to reproduce from a simple photograph.

Carlo might not know that Matteo knew.

“Take them inside,” Carlo ordered.

They were escorted into the factory.

The air smelled of oil, damp brick, and the sugar that had soaked into the walls during decades of candy production.

Carlo waited in the old processing room.

He was seventy-three and walked with a cane. Age had not softened him. His pale eyes were almost identical to Matteo’s.

Adrian stood chained nearby.

When Matteo entered, the brothers stared at each other.

Neither spoke.

Leo broke free and ran to his father.

Adrian dropped to his knees.

The guard allowed the embrace.

For several seconds, everything else disappeared.

Then Carlo struck Adrian’s shoulder with the cane.

“Stand.”

Matteo’s expression became lethal.

Carlo noticed.

“You still care for people who left you.”

“He was imprisoned.”

“He chose weakness.”

Sofia moved toward her son.

Carlo aimed a pistol at her.

She stopped.

“Locker two-fourteen,” he said. “What is inside?”

Adrian held Leo close.

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“You.”

Carlo smiled. “Then it has failed.”

Penelope stepped forward.

“Why did Madison have the key?”

Everyone looked at her.

“My sister used locker 214 while staff repaired the bridal suite closet. Someone must have placed something inside.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“The bride does not know?”

“No.”

“Then Carlo has someone at the hotel.”

Carlo’s smile confirmed it.

Penelope’s phone rang.

Madison’s number appeared.

Carlo gestured for her to answer.

“Penny?” Madison sounded breathless. “Where are you?”

“Where are you?”

“At the hotel. Nathan and I came back to check the ballroom after Dad’s surgery.”

Relief almost weakened Penelope’s knees.

“Go to security. Right now.”

“What happened?”

“Do not enter the employee changing area.”

A door slammed over the phone.

Madison lowered her voice.

“Someone is in the suite.”

Penelope looked at Carlo.

He watched with amusement.

“Lock yourself in the bathroom,” Penelope said. “Call police.”

The line went dead.

She lunged at Carlo.

Matteo caught her before a guard could strike.

“You sent someone after my sister!”

Carlo adjusted his cuff.

“The locker contains a drive Adrian stole. I need it.”

“She knows nothing.”

“Then she should give my man no trouble.”

Penelope struggled against Matteo’s hold.

“Let me go.”

“If I do, he will shoot you.”

“I don’t care.”

“I do.”

The words stopped her.

Matteo looked at Carlo.

“You want the drive. We retrieve it together.”

“No police.”

“Agreed.”

Luca frowned but said nothing.

“Adrian, Leo, Sofia, and Penelope remain here,” Carlo said.

“No,” Matteo replied.

Carlo smiled. “Then the bride dies.”

Matteo’s hand remained around Penelope’s waist.

She felt the conflict in him.

If he went to the hotel, Carlo kept her.

If he refused, Madison remained trapped with an armed man.

“I’ll stay,” Penelope said.

“No.”

She turned toward Matteo.

“Ask me.”

“This is not the time.”

“This is exactly the time.”

His grip tightened.

Penelope lowered her voice.

“Madison spent years asking me to swallow pain so her life would stay peaceful. Tonight she apologized. I’m not leaving her alone now.”

“Carlo will use you against me.”

“He already is.”

“He will hurt you.”

“Then come back quickly.”

Something raw appeared in his eyes.

She touched his face.

“I choose to stay.”

Matteo closed his eyes for one second.

When he opened them, the mafia boss had returned.

He looked at Carlo.

“If she is injured, every person loyal to you loses everything before sunrise.”

Carlo seemed amused.

“That sounds like love.”

“It is a guarantee.”

Matteo left with Luca and two of Carlo’s guards.

At the hotel, the wedding floor was silent.

Matteo used Penelope’s instructions to reach the bridal suite through a service corridor.

Madison remained locked in the bathroom.

A man searched the bedroom.

Luca disabled the lights.

Matteo entered through the connecting door.

The intruder fired twice.

Luca tackled him near the bed.

Matteo reached the bathroom.

“Madison.”

She did not answer.

“Penelope sent me.”

The lock opened.

Madison stood inside holding a marble soap dish like a weapon.

“Where is my sister?”

“With Carlo Duca.”

“Who?”

“An explanation would consume time.”

They reached the changing area.

Locker 214 stood open.

It was empty.

Madison stared.

“I put a package in there.”

“What package?”

“A woman gave it to me after the rehearsal last week. She said it belonged to Penelope.”

“What woman?”

“Silver hair. Red coat.”

Sofia.

“What did you do with it?”

“I moved it to the ballroom gift safe.”

“Why?”

“The locker didn’t feel secure.”

Matteo almost smiled.

Penelope’s sister had the same instinct for inconvenient choices.

They retrieved the package.

Inside was a drive, a photograph, and an old cassette.

The photograph showed Carlo beside Chicago’s mayor, three judges, Richard Jenkins, and Charles Wentworth—the Lakeshore Grand’s general manager.

Wentworth had cloned Penelope’s badge.

He had also suspended her after helping frame her.

The cassette bore one handwritten line:

MATTEO MUST NEVER HEAR THIS.

Luca looked at him.

“We should listen.”

Matteo inserted the tape into an old audiovisual player in the hotel office.

His mother’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, Carlo discovered Adrian survived. Matteo must know the truth. Carlo did not order the car bombing alone. I did.”

Matteo stopped breathing.

His mother continued.

“I agreed to frighten my husband into abandoning the federal investigation. Carlo promised the explosion would occur after the family left the vehicle. He lied. Sofia warned me too late.”

The recording crackled.

“Matteo, I caused your father’s death. Adrian knew. That is why Carlo kept him. Forgive your brother for surviving. Do not forgive what we made you become.”

The tape ended.

Matteo sat motionless.

His entire understanding of the past had changed in less than a minute.

Luca spoke quietly.

“We need to return.”

Matteo looked at the drive.

“No.”

“Penelope is with Carlo.”

“That is why we finish this.”

He connected the drive to a secure computer.

It contained evidence against judges, police officials, corporations, and every remaining branch of Carlo’s organization.

It also contained live surveillance from the factory.

Matteo saw Penelope seated beside Leo.

Sofia stood nearby.

Adrian remained chained.

Carlo entered the frame.

He held Penelope’s phone.

“The drive is not in the locker,” he said to the camera. “You have thirty minutes.”

He turned toward Penelope.

A guard forced her to her knees.

May you like

Carlo placed a gun against the back of her head.

“After that, nephew, your little marriage becomes a very short one.”
