Chapter 5 – “The War for Lily Mercer”

The first thing Marcus Mercer did when he woke up was check if Lily was still breathing.

It was something he had done thousands of times when she was a baby.

A habit he never lost.

Even after she grew old enough to tell him she didn't need him checking on her every night.

Even after she started sleeping in her own room.

Even after she became brave enough to face thunderstorms without crawling into his bed.

Marcus still checked.

Because fathers did not stop worrying.

They just learned how to hide it.

But this morning was different.

Because Lily wasn't sleeping peacefully after a nightmare.

"Now I'm finding out who did it."

Across the city, Cassandra Vale watched the news.

The reporters had already discovered something happened at the Mercer Estate.

Not details.

Not yet.

But enough.

"Sources confirm billionaire Marcus Mercer returned unexpectedly after international travel restrictions were lifted..."

She turned off the television.

Her hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From anger.

Everything had gone wrong.

The plan was perfect.

She had spent years preparing.

Years pretending.

Years waiting.

And then one phone call from a terrified little girl ruined everything.

Lily.

The child who was never supposed to matter.

The child who had become Marcus's weakness.

Cassandra looked at the photograph on the table.

A picture of Marcus.

Of Lily.

Of Elena.

A perfect family.

A family that should have been hers.

"You stole everything from me."

Her voice was quiet.

A man sitting across the room watched her.

"You still believe that?"

Cassandra looked up.

Ethan Vale.

Alive.

Angry.

Broken.

"You don't understand."

Ethan laughed.

"No."

"I understand perfectly."

"You wanted his money."

"You wanted his name."

"But you also wanted something else."

Cassandra glared.

"What?"

"To be loved by someone who never chose you."

The words hit harder than she expected.

"Don't pretend you know me."

"I know you better than Marcus does."

Ethan leaned forward.

"You weren't trying to inherit an empire."

"You were trying to replace a family."

Cassandra looked away.

For a moment...

She looked almost human.

Then the cold returned.

"Where is the file?"

Ethan's expression changed.

"The Elena file?"

"Yes."

"You didn't get it."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Neither did Marcus."

Ethan smiled slightly.

"But someone did."

At the Mercer Estate, Lily sat at the kitchen table.

She looked smaller than usual.

Marcus noticed.

Before last night, Lily filled every room she entered.

She sang.

She laughed.

She asked a thousand questions.

Now she barely spoke.

He placed a plate of pancakes in front of her.

Her favorite.

She looked at it.

Then at him.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Was Cassandra pretending?"

Marcus sat across from her.

The question hurt.

"Yes."

"Did she ever love me?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Because he refused to lie.

"I don't know."

Lily looked down.

"She said I wasn't yours."

Marcus reached across the table.

"Look at me."

Slowly, she did.

"You are my daughter."

"But what if—"

"No."

His voice was firm.

Not angry.

Certain.

"Nothing changes that."

"What if someone proves it?"

Marcus leaned closer.

"Lily."

"DNA doesn't make a father."

"Love does."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You really mean that?"

"I would fight the whole world for you."

A tiny smile appeared.

"The whole world?"

Marcus smiled.

"The whole world."

For the first time since the nightmare began...

Lily smiled.

That afternoon, the truth finally arrived.

Adrian entered the office holding a tablet.

"Marcus."

One look at his face told Marcus it was serious.

"What did you find?"

"The Blackwell Foundation isn't a charity."

Marcus stood.

"What is it?"

"A front."

"For what?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Human trafficking."

The room went silent.

Marcus's expression turned dark.

"And Lily?"

Adrian nodded.

"They were targeting children connected to wealthy families."

Marcus felt sick.

"They weren't after my money."

"No."

Adrian looked at the files.

"They were after access."

"Access to what?"

"Your companies."

"Your accounts."

"Your inheritance."

"And Lily."

Marcus's hands tightened.

"Why Lily?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because she is the legal heir."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

"When Elena died, your estate documents changed."

"She secretly created a trust."

"For Lily."

Marcus stared.

His daughter.

Seven years old.

The person everyone underestimated.

The person they tried to erase.

Was the key to everything.

Adrian continued.

"The Blackwell Foundation knew."

"They believed removing Lily would remove the obstacle."

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Where Lily was drawing with one of the security guards.

A little girl.

Holding the future of an empire she never asked for.

"They wanted my daughter gone."

His voice became dangerously quiet.

"Because she was the only thing standing between them and everything."

That night, Marcus received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?"

A woman's voice responded.

A voice he hadn't heard in three years.

His heart stopped.

Because he knew it.

"Marcus..."

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

"Elena?"

Silence.

Then:

"Listen to me."

His breathing stopped.

"Where are you?"

"I don't have much time."

"Elena, you're alive?"

"I need you to listen."

Marcus stood.

"Where is Lily?"

"With you?"

"Yes."

A shaky breath.

"Good."

"Marcus, they are coming for her again."

His eyes darkened.

"Who?"

"The people who killed me."

A pause.

"The people who want our daughter."

Marcus looked toward Lily's room.

Then his voice became cold.

"Tell me where you are."

"I can't."

"Elena—"

"You have to understand."

Her voice broke.

"I didn't leave because I wanted to."

"I disappeared because staying would have gotten Lily killed."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Three years.

Three years believing he lost her.

Three years mourning.

Three years alone.

And now...

She was alive.

"Please."

Her voice trembled.

"Protect our daughter."

The call cut off.

Marcus stood frozen.

Then he looked at the security cameras.

One image appeared.

A black car outside the gates.

Someone was watching the house.

Someone had found them.

Again.

Marcus walked toward the window.

The fear was gone.

Only determination remained.

They had tried to take Lily.

They had tried to steal his family.

They had tried to bury the truth.

But they made one mistake.

They gave Marcus Mercer a reason to fight.

And now...

The entire world was about to learn what happened when a father had nothing left to lose.

The war for Lily Mercer had begun.
