Chapter 4 - The Changing Rules

Over the next two weeks, the dynamic inside the Romano estate underwent a subtle, undeniable transformation that did not escape the notice of the household staff.
It began with Tessa’s work schedule.
Without any public announcement or explanation, Tessa’s daily duty roster was permanently capped at exactly eight hours per day.
Her name was systematically removed from the late-night cleaning schedules.
When the head housekeeper, an austere woman named Mrs. Gable, attempted to assign Tessa to scrub the expansive outdoor terrace during a freezing rainstorm, Paulie personally intervened.
“She’s assigned to the West Wing,” Paulie had barked at Mrs. Gable, crossing his massive arms over his chest. “The boss wants her focused on his private quarters. Find someone else to scrub the terrace.”
Tessa found herself spending the majority of her shifts working inside the West Wing—cleaning Victor’s study, organizing his vast library, and maintaining the private private lounge area.
She rarely spoke to Victor directly during those hours.
He was often working at his desk, surrounded by maps, ledger books, and low-toned phone conversations with men regarding shipping containers, union negotiations, and territory disputes.
Yet, his presence no longer terrified her as it once had.
She observed things that the rest of the world never saw.
She saw how he took his coffee—black, with two drops of bitters.
She saw how he rubbed the bridge of his nose when he was deeply stressed about his men's safety.
She saw how he secretly left extra cash on his desk whenever he knew she was cleaning the room, framing it as "tips for organizing his files."
One afternoon, while Tessa was standing on a wooden step-stool wiping down the tall glass panels of the library bookcases, her right foot slipped on the polished hardwood floor.
She gasped, losing her balance, dropping her cleaning cloth as she fell backward toward the ground.
Before she could hit the hard floor, two massive arms caught her securely in mid-air.
She was pulled firmly against a broad, hard chest.
The intense heat, the scent of expensive tobacco, leather, and fine Italian cologne enveloped her instantly.
Tessa looked up, her breath hitching in her throat.
Victor was holding her effortlessly in his arms, his dark eyes looking down into hers with intense, razor-sharp concern.
“You need to be more careful,” he said softly, his deep voice vibrating through his chest against her back.
“I... I am sorry, Mr. Romano,” Tessa stammered, her cheeks flushing a bright, burning crimson. “My foot slipped—”
Victor set her down gently on her feet, but he did not step back immediately.
He remained standing remarkably close to her, his shadow completely enveloping her smaller frame.
He extended his right hand, his rough thumb gently brushing a small smudge of dust off her cheek bone.
The touch was impossibly soft for a man whose hands carried so much violence.
Tessa froze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat as his fingers lingered against her skin for two long, agonizing seconds.
“Are you hurt?” he asked quietly.
“No,” she whispered, staring into his dark eyes. “I'm... I'm fine.”
Before Victor could speak again, the heavy library doors swung open.
Paulie rushed into the room, holding a encrypted satellite phone in his hand, his face pale and covered in sweat.
“Boss,” Paulie said urgently, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw how close Victor was standing to Tessa. He quickly cleared his throat, averting his eyes. “Boss... we have a situation down at the South Docks. The O'Malley crew just intercepted one of our primary supply trucks. They pulled guns on our drivers.”
The soft, tender look in Victor’s eyes disappeared instantly, replaced in a split second by a blinding, terrifying wall of absolute ice.
He stepped away from Tessa, his entire posture transforming into that of a warlord preparing for battle.
“How many men did they bring?” Victor asked, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that sent a shiver down Tessa’s spine.
“A dozen,” Paulie reported. “Liam Moore was working the unloading shift down there. The idiot tried to run, and O'Malley's men grabbed him. They're holding him at the warehouse.”
Tessa let out a sharp, horrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. “Liam!”
Victor turned his head slowly, looking back at Tessa.
He saw the absolute terror in her wide brown eyes, the tears immediately welling up on her lashes, her small body trembling violently at the news of her brother's capture.

Victor looked back at Paulie.
“Get the cars ready,” Victor commanded flatly. “We're going to the docks.”
