CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR FOR LILY’S FUTURE

The first thing Cole Merritt noticed when he woke up was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the kind that came with early mornings and empty streets.

This silence felt like the world was waiting.

Waiting for something to break.

He opened his eyes and looked across the room.

For a moment, he forgot everything.

Then he saw the small blanket on the sofa.

The stuffed rabbit beside it.

And the memory returned.

Lily.

Maria.

Danielle.

Evan.

The betrayal.

The war.

Cole had spent his entire life believing that losing money was the worst thing that could happen to a person.

He had been wrong.

Money could be replaced.

Companies could be rebuilt.

Buildings could be sold and purchased again.

But trust?

Trust was something that died quietly.

And once it was gone…

It rarely came back.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table eating cereal when Cole walked in.

She looked up immediately.

“Good morning.”

The simplicity of those words almost hurt him.

Good morning.

As if the world had not changed.

As if people were not trying to destroy each other.

As if a little girl had not become the center of a billion-dollar war.

Cole poured himself coffee.

“You slept well?”

She nodded.

“Your bed is too big.”

Cole smiled slightly.

“Too big?”

“Yes.”

She stretched her arms.

“I feel lost.”

For some reason, that sentence stayed with him.

Because that was exactly how he felt.

Lost.

Not financially.

Not professionally.

Personally.

He had spent thirty-three years knowing exactly who he was.

Cole Merritt.

Son of Gerald Merritt.

Owner of Merritt Hotels.

A man who controlled his own destiny.

But now?

He was just a man trying to protect a child who was not even his.

And somehow, that made him feel more human than ever.

At 9:00 a.m., Marcus arrived with new information.

Cole knew from his expression that it was bad.

“What happened?”

Marcus placed a folder on the table.

“The court papers were filed.”

Cole frowned.

“What court papers?”

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then lowered his voice.

“Danielle filed for emergency guardianship.”

Cole went completely still.

“What?”

“She’s claiming you are an unstable billionaire keeping a child illegally.”

The anger came instantly.

“She abandoned the child.”

“We know.”

“Maria is her mother.”

“We know.”

“Then how?”

Marcus sighed.

“Because Danielle created a story.”

Cole opened the folder.

The documents were full of accusations.

Neglect.

Emotional instability.

Questionable behavior.

The words were carefully chosen.

Designed to make him look dangerous.

“She’s trying to take Lily.”

Marcus nodded.

“And she has a legal team ready.”

Cole stared at the papers.

This was no longer about money.

No longer about the company.

No longer about revenge.

This was about a child.

A child who had already lost enough.

The hearing happened two days later.

The courtroom was packed.

News cameras waited outside.

The story had become public.

BILLIONAIRE FIGHTS FOR CUSTODY OF MISSING EMPLOYEE’S DAUGHTER

The headlines were brutal.

Because people loved watching powerful people fall.

Inside the courtroom, Danielle sat confidently beside her lawyers.

She wore a simple dress.

No designer labels.

No expensive jewelry.

A carefully created image.

The grieving woman.

The concerned mother figure.

Cole hated how good she was at pretending.

When he sat down, she looked at him.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Cole saw something.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

Because she knew.

He knew.

And the truth was coming.

The judge looked over the documents.

“Mr. Merritt, why is this child currently under your care?”

Cole stood.

“Because I found her alone.”

“Without her mother?”

“Yes.”

“And you decided to keep her?”

Cole looked at Lily.

Then back.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I decided to protect her.”

The judge studied him.

“Do you have legal guardianship?”

“Not yet.”

“Then why should this court allow you to continue?”

Cole took a breath.

Because the truth mattered.

“Because nobody else was there.”

The room became quiet.

“When Lily was scared, nobody came.”

He looked at Danielle.

“Except me.”

Danielle looked away.

The judge turned.

“Ms. Foss, why are you requesting guardianship?”

Danielle stood.

Her voice softened.

“Because I believe this child deserves stability.”

Cole almost laughed.

Stability.

The word sounded ridiculous coming from her.

“She has been through trauma,” Danielle continued.

“She needs someone who can provide a secure environment.”

The judge nodded.

“And you believe you can?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Danielle looked toward Lily.

“Because I understand what she needs.”

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

But everyone heard.

“No.”

The courtroom froze.

The judge looked at her.

“Sweetheart?”

Lily pointed at Danielle.

“She doesn’t like me.”

Danielle immediately shook her head.

“That’s not true.”

Lily hugged her rabbit.

“She said I was a problem.”

The room exploded with whispers.

Danielle went pale.

The judge looked serious.

“Ms. Foss?”

“That child is confused.”

Cole immediately stood.

“She is three years old.”

The judge raised a hand.

“Sit down, Mr. Merritt.”

Cole sat.

But his eyes never left Danielle.

Because Lily had just done what adults had failed to do.

She told the truth.

Then the door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Weak.

Pale.

But alive.

Maria Delgado.

Cole stood immediately.

“Maria.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

He walked toward her.

But she shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“First.”

The moment Lily saw her mother…

Everything stopped.

“Mommy?”

Maria broke.

She rushed forward.

The two hugged.

And for the first time in weeks…

Lily cried because she was happy.

Cole watched silently.

Because he understood something.

No matter how much he wanted to protect Lily…

He was never meant to replace her mother.

He was meant to help them both.

Maria’s testimony changed everything.

She told the court about Danielle.

The threats.

The money.

The pressure.

The manipulation.

Then she revealed the final secret.

“The night I disappeared…”

Everyone listened.

“I found documents.”

Cole looked at her.

“What documents?”

Maria looked at him.

“Your father’s.”

The courtroom became silent.

“My father?”

Maria nodded.

“Danielle and Evan were looking for them.”

The judge frowned.

“What documents?”

Maria looked down.

“Documents proving Gerald Merritt planned to change the company ownership structure before his death.”

Cole froze.

“What?”

Maria continued.

“Your father knew someone might try to take control of Merritt Holdings.”

The room became silent.

“He created a hidden trust.”

Cole stared.

A hidden trust.

Something his father never told him.

“Where is it?”

Maria looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Then she looked at Danielle.

“But they do.”

After the hearing, Cole found Maria outside.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“I found pieces.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Danielle threatened Lily.”

Cole’s expression changed.

“She said if I talked, she would make sure Lily disappeared.”

Cole closed his eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

Maria whispered:

“I tried to protect her.”

“You did.”

She looked surprised.

Cole continued.

“You protected her when I couldn’t.”

That evening, Marcus found the missing piece.

The hidden trust.

Not hidden anymore.

Because Gerald Merritt had left instructions.

A video.

Recorded five years before his death.

Cole sat in the private office watching his father appear on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Cole.”

The sound of his father’s voice almost destroyed him.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.”

Cole swallowed.

Gerald continued.

“I know you. You want to believe the best in people.”

A small smile.

“That is your greatest strength.”

Then his expression became serious.

“But it can also be your weakness.”

Cole leaned forward.

“I created this trust because I was afraid someone would try to use your kindness against you.”

The video continued.

“The Merritt legacy was never about money.”

A pause.

“It was about protecting people.”

Then Gerald said the words that changed everything.

“The person who controls Merritt Holdings must prove they understand this.”

The screen displayed a document.

A condition.

Cole read it.

And froze.

The trust was not controlled by the richest person.

Not the strongest.

Not the most powerful.

It belonged to the person who protected the most vulnerable.

The person who proved they carried his father’s values.

The next morning, everything changed.

The board received the evidence.

The investors saw the truth.

Danielle and Evan’s plan collapsed.

But they were not finished.

Before authorities arrived…

They disappeared.

Leaving behind one final message.

A video.

Danielle appeared on screen.

Her expression was cold.

“You wanted the truth, Cole.”

She smiled.

“Now you’ll get it.”

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A hospital record.

A name.

A date.

Cole stared.

Because the document revealed something impossible.

Danielle’s pregnancy was real.

But the child…

Was not his.

The father’s name on the record was:

Evan Merritt.

Cole looked at the screen.

The entire betrayal.

The engagement.

The lies.

The stolen money.

Everything.

It had all been built on one secret.

A secret that could destroy the Merritt family forever.

Then Marcus said the words Cole feared most.

“Cole…”

He looked up.

“What?”

“They took Lily.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

“The security cameras caught Danielle and Evan leaving.”

Cole’s face changed.

“Where?”

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Unknown.”

Cole grabbed his jacket.

And for the first time in his life…

The billionaire who had lost everything…

Had nothing left to lose.

May you like

Except the little girl who taught him what family really meant.
