Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE

The silence that followed Clara Vance's declaration was absolute.

Outside, the storm lashed at the glass, but inside the study, time seemed to freeze. I looked at the woman standing before me—her wet clothes, her bruised hands, her fierce, unwavering gaze.

Crosby Vane’s daughter.

My hand instinctively reached beneath the lip of the desk, where an electronic button would signal Prescott to execute the intruder instantly.

"If you press that button," Clara said calmly, watching my shoulder shift, "the vault in Vane’s safehouse self-destructs. It’s wired to a dead-man system linked to my biometric signature. If my heart rate drops below forty beats per minute, or if I don't enter a check-in code every six hours, a thermite charge ignites inside the cryo-container. Your children's only chance turns to ash."

I withdrew my hand, slowly standing up to my full height. "Crosby Vane doesn't have a daughter. He has two sons—Julian and Marcus. I know every branch of that bastard’s family tree."

"He has an illegitimate daughter," Clara corrected, a flash of bitter pain crossing her features. "Born to a woman he kept in an apartment in Milwaukee until she died of liver failure when I was twelve. Crosby brought me into his household as a 'secretary.' I washed his clothes, typed his extortions, and watched him build his empire on blood. I was invisible to him, Mr. Mercer. Until I found out what he did to your wife."

I moved out from behind the desk, stepping so close to Clara that I could smell the rain and the faint scent of copper on her coat.

"Tell me everything," I said. "Every word. If I catch even a hint of deceit, I will make sure death is the kindest thing that happens to you today."

Clara took a shaky breath, crossing her arms over her chest as if trying to hold herself together.

"Seven years ago, Genevieve found out that her father—your late father-in-law—owed forty million dollars to Crosby’s illegal offshore bank," Clara began. "Crosby threatened to destroy the Mercer name, to leak documents that would have put your father in federal prison. Genevieve wanted to protect you, Lawson. She was young, terrified, and pregnant with the twins."

My hands clenched into fists at my sides. Genevieve had carried that weight alone while I was off expanding Mercer Enterprises across Europe. I had thought I was protecting her, building a fortress around her, while the real poison was already inside the walls.

"Crosby forced her to sign over the rights to her family’s private biological research," Clara continued. "Genevieve’s grandfather was a pioneer in experimental cellular therapy. When she gave birth to Jonah and Blythe, Crosby forced her physician to extract a secondary stem-cell harvest. He kept it as leverage—a bargaining chip in case he ever needed to force you to your knees."

"Why didn't he use it?" I growled. "When Genevieve died, why didn't he bring it to me?"

"Because he didn't know your children were sick until two weeks ago," Clara said, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "Crosby’s mole inside your medical team—the nurse, Sarah Jenkins—sent him the twins' recent bloodwork. Crosby realized he held the only key to saving the Mercer heirs. He was planning to wait until day nine—when you were broken, desperate, and willing to sign over your entire corporate empire—to offer you the sample in exchange for Mercer Enterprises."

The sheer, sickening cruelty of the plan made my vision blur with red. Crosby Vane wasn't just my business rival; he was a parasite who had fed on my family's agony for a decade.

"And why are you here?" I asked, eyeing her suspiciously. "Why betray your father to save my children?"

Clara looked away for the first time, her gaze drifting toward the door that led to the residential wing where Jonah and Blythe lay dying.

"Because six years ago, I was the one Crosby sent to deliver the final extortion letter to Genevieve," Clara whispered, tears finally breaking through her stoic defense and cutting clean tracks through the dirt on her cheeks. "I saw her in that café downtown. She was eight months pregnant. She was terrified, but she didn't beg for herself. She begged me to protect her babies. She handed me a silver locket with their first ultrasound pictures inside and asked me if I had a soul."

Clara reached inside her collar and pulled out a tarnished silver locket on a delicate chain.

She held it out to me.

"I didn't stop my father back then," Clara said, her voice cracking. "I was terrified of him. I let Genevieve walk out of that café into the trap he set for her. I’ve lived in hell for six years, Mr. Mercer. Two days ago, when I heard Crosby laughing in his study about how your twins were going to die while he took your money, I stole the vault keycards and ran."

I took the silver locket from her hand. I snapped it open. Inside were two microscopic black-and-white photos of my unborn children, stamped with Genevieve's handwriting: Jonah & Blythe. My life.

My knees felt weak, but the rage burning in my stomach kept me upright.

"Where is Crosby now?" I asked.

"He knows I fled," Clara said, wiping her face with the back of her wet sleeve. "His men are hunting me. He thinks I'm trying to sell the sample to an international buyer. By midnight, he’ll move the cryo-container from the safehouse on 14th Street to his main compound in Northbrook. Once it's inside Northbrook, you’ll never get it out without an army."

I stepped to the door, pulled it open, and looked at Prescott.

"Lawson?" Prescott asked, his hand resting on the butt of his suppressed sidearm.

"Cancel the precincts," I commanded, my voice flat, deadly, and absolute. "Call the Strike Team. Assemble them in the armory in ten minutes. We’re going to 14th Street."

Prescott’s eyes widened slightly. "14th Street is Vane’s primary distribution hub. It's a fortress, Lawson. If we hit that location, it’s an open war."

I looked back at Clara, who stood waiting, ready to walk into the fire with me.

"It was already a war, Prescott," I said. "They just didn't know I was coming."
